The Subaru XT was a sporty coupe made by Japanese car maker Subaru. The Subaru XT sold very well during its production period because of its class leading styling and performance. The Subaru XT was first released in 1985 and continued production until 1991. The Subaru XT was also sold as the Subaru XT6, the Subaru Vortex and the Subaru Alcyon. The Subaru Alcyon name was used for the Japan model of the car. The Subaru XT6 name was used for the North American market of the car as well as in Europe. The Subaru Vortex name was used for the versions of the car sold in New Zealand and in Australia. Depending on the model year, the Subaru XT was sold as a front wheel drive vehicle or as a four wheel drive vehicle. Design wise, the Subaru XT was unique in its time. During the time of the release of the Subaru XT, Subaru had already produced uniquely styled vehicles for the period. The Subaru XT was lauded as being uniquely design because of its extremely wedged shape. The car featured an impressive drag coefficient of 0.29cd due to the heavy testing in the wind tunnel that the car was subjected to during its design development. Among the design cues of the Subaru XT that maximized the car's aerodynamics was its door handles that flush with the outside of the door. In order to open the door, a release mechanism had to be activated to access the door handles of the car. The Subaru XT also had rubber spoilers which served to direct the flow of air away from the wheels of the car which lessened the drag of the car. In the market, the Subaru XT did not sell very well. Although styled as a sporty vehicle, the car never really impressed performance car buyers. Subaru also marketed the features of the car as one of its strengths. However, at the time Subaru still had not established itself as a preferred car maker for car buyers looking for feature-full car models. The Subaru XT is most popularly known for its extreme wedged design. Subaru was able to achieve the this particular body shape due to the particular engine used by the car which it shares with the other car models of Subaru. There were two engines used in the Subaru XT. One was the EA82 1781 cc H4 engine which produced a power output of 97 hp at 5200 rpm and a torque force of 103 ft-lbf at 3200 rpm. The other was the EA82T which was a turbocharged version of the EA82 capable of producing a power output of 112 hp at 4800 rpm and a torque force of 143 ft-lbf at 2800 rpm. The transmissions available were a 4 speed automatic transmission and a 5 speed Manual Overdrive transmission. As a performance car, the Subaru XT is not really up to the standards of current car models. However, in terms of price, the Subaru XT should be cheaper to get as they are now only available in the second hand car markets.
