The BMW X-5 is a BMW crossover SUV that is more described as a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) rather then being a Sport Utility Vehicle. This description was stressed by BMW to give emphasis to the cars on-road ability despite being a mid-size SUV. The BMW X5 models that are sold worldwide from 1999 are manufactured in the South Carolina plant of BMW in Spartanburg, South Carolina where the BMW X6, X3, and the BMW Z4 roadster are also made. The original BMW X5 is available in 4-wheel drives that emphasizes more power in the rear with its 62-38 torque or power distribution that resembles the power of the rear wheel drives. The usual body-on-frame structures of SUVs was changed to sedan-based crossovers in the X5 model. The making of the X5 models started with the sketches of Chris Bangle in late 1990s in his California based Designworks studio. These sketches are still evident in the current X5 car models. The developers of the X5 mainly used the Range Rover parts and technology in this model after the BMWs take over of the Rover Company. The X5 was made more as a sporting road car that contrasts the features of the Range Rover models that are mostly off-roaders. The X5 models have limited off-road powers in its 2WD-like 4WD feature that gives 62% engine torque to the rear wheels. The X5 can do well in gravels and grasses but will likely to suffer in other off-road situations. A special off-road version of the X5 model, the X5 LM was made for off-roaders and was even used by Hans Joachim Stuck in Nurburging to make a record setting lap in 2000. The X5 has experienced several physical changes that include new headlights, new exterior colors, upgraded engines, and a new 4WD system. The new xDrive was introduced to replace the split 62-38 4-wheel capacity of the original X5s. The xDrive is capable of fast shifting of up to 100% of the engine powers from either the front or rear axles to regain tractions at a quicker pace. The original 290 hp engine output was upgraded to 315hp with the use of the 4.4i engine. The 4.8is was also used in some X5 models giving an output of 355 hp that ranked the X5 as the 3rd fastest among SUVs. This first generation X5 models also known as E53 was continously upgraded in annual basis up to its end in year 2006. The year 2007 marked the birth of the BMW E70, the second generation BMW X5 SAV/SUV. The new model is wider and longer than its predecessor but remains the same in height. New features include the more refined xDrive and the use of the front double wishbone suspensions. The new X5 also uses the advanced iDrive system, a space saving electronic joystick gearshift, LED taillamps, active damping, active steering, head-up display, and a Dynamic Drive counteracting body rolls. The E70 offers its all-new interiors including the glass panorama-roof and the third row seat that comes optional to those who want to seat seven passengers. The E70 was also the first to use the FlexRay system that controls the chassis damping system. The current X5 models are available in petrol engines such as the X5 3.0si, the 3.0-liter 272 hp N52B30 inline-6 that can run a 100km/h in 8.0 seconds, and the X5 4.8i, a 4.8-liter 355 hp N62B48 V8 that can run a 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. Diesel models use either of the 3.0-liter M57TUD30 inline-6 engines that can provide engine outputs of 235 hp or 286 hp. The X5 is an award winning crossover SUV that was named as the Australias Best Luxury Four Wheel Drive for two consecutive years in 2001 and 2002. It is also one of the best safety pick (the X3 being the other) and awarded by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety with the Top Safety Pick Award in 2008. Those wanting safety and luxury at the same time in SUVs must give the BMW X5 a try. . Headlights by State: ______________________
