Like the BMW X5, the BMW X3 was also described by its makers as an SAV or Sports Activity Vehicle while it belongs to the category of compact crossover SUVs. The initial model of X3 sits in a BMW 3-Series E46 platform. This award winning SAV/SUV model particularly the X3 3.0i bagged the Canadian Car of the Year Best New Sport Utility Vehicle award in 2005. The X3 particularly the first generation was the only BMW car that was produced outside BMW plants. The X3, also known as E83 was first shown as a concept car in the 2003 Detroit Auto Show. The development of the X3 was assigned to an Austrian contractor named Magna Steyr. The notable feature of the X3 is the use of the xDrive that is also used in the X5 models replacing the original 62-38 power split 4X4 system. The X3 like the X5 also has a limited power in off road driving. Its power and handling are more of a road car or luxury car in the size of an SUV. This car-like handling features of the X3 have contributed to its high sales against its low priced competitors. Since its initial production in 2004 the X3 models are made with unique cosmetics designs in every year model. New features and developments are made with the X3 annualy. In 2005, the Bluetooth was added as an option for all new X3s together with the Open Door indicator. The interiors were also upgraded same with the front fenders and suspensions. The 2006 versions especially the ones delivered in US used the special M technik bodykit and the 2.5i models were replaced by the 3.0i models. The 3.0si that can give 260 hp at lower engine speed was used in the 2007 BMW X3 model. Other new features in the current BMW X3 include the front and rear facia that look like the 5-door X5 SUV. LED lights are also used together with other interior upgrades and the Cold Weather package that features heated front and rear seats. An off road version of the X3 was also made and named as X3 Cross Country or X3 CC. This design is intended for use in rally raid competitions. It has a twin turbocharged 2.9-liter diesel engine. The current standard X3 SAV in 3.0si are available with Xdrive system, Hill Descent Control (HDC), and front and rear stabilizers or anti-roll bars. The X3 3.0si SAV is rich in safety features that include ADB-X (Adaptive Differential Brakes), Adaptive Brake Lights, front safety belts that are equipped with pretensioners, and more.
