Volvo 1800 Headlights: Find Your Replacement 1800 Headlight Assembly

The Volvo 1800 was a sports car sold by Volvo from 1961 up to 1973. During its production period, the Volvo 1800 was a moderate seller for Volvo.

Swedish car maker Volvo, before the release of the Volvo 1800, was not known for producing sports cars. The car company's car models were known to be sedate and sober offerings which could be relied and were not very flashy. However, by the late 1950s, Volvo had realised the large potential of the sports car market and wanted to release a sports car model of their own. The result was the Volvo 1800. Design for the Volvo 1800 first started in 1957 but the car was not released until 1963. At one point, the Volvo 1800 project was almost cancelled. The problem Volvo faced with the production of the Volvo 1800 was mainly because of the lack of a assembly line space. In fact, the first versions of the Volvo 1800 were partially built by the Pressed Steel company in the United Kingdom. Pressed Steel would tool the body/chassis of the Volvo P1800 in their factory and would then send the output to the Jensen, West Bromwich where the assembly of the Volvo 1800 would be completed. The Volvo P1800 made a modest splash among car buyers on its release. One of the prime attractions of the Volvo 1800 was interestingly enough, the fact that it came from Volvo, a car company that no body expected to release a sports car model. Stylistically, the Volvo 1800 incorporated many design cues common among Ghia and Frua car designs. On the road, the car offered nothing that would make it stand out from the other sports car models at the time. Still, the Volvo 1800 had its share of fans. The car benefited from the popularity of the Volvo brand, it was an able road performer, its workmanship was top notch and its styling won points for both aesthetics and functionality.

The Volvo 1800 brought nothing new to the sports car market when it was released except for the fact that the car was built by Volvo. On its first release, the car borrowed many components under the hood from the Volvo Amazon models. The engine was a 1.8 litre four cylinder engine rated with an output of 100 hp. The transmission of the Volvo 1800 was a synchromesh transmission with an overdrive feature. In 1968, the car got a bigger 2.0 litre engine and, a year later it received the fuel injection system of Bosch. The transmission was also changed to the transmission of the Volvo 164 sedan. The last of the Volvo 1800 models released was the ES version which was a restyled Volvo 1800, changing the two door sports coupe body style to a three door sports estate. The Volvo 1800ES is notable for its all glass tailgate which was reused on later Volvo models.

The stylish yet sedate Volvo 1800 gets top marks for style, durability and reliability. This car may not be a hot rod on the road but its decent performance and sleek, classic design is sure to turn heads. Second hand buyers should get one if the opportunity presents itself.
