The Volvo 164 was a four door sedan car model from Volvo which was sold as an executive sedan from 1968 up to 1975. The Volvo 164 sold well during its production period and it is currently one of the most easily recognized Volvo car models. The Volvo 164 was designed by Jan Wilsgaard during the late 1950s. The original concept model of the Volvo 164 was named as the P358. The design of the car borrowed many cues from the Volvo P1900 and the Wolseley 6/99 and the car was powered by a V8 engine. The P358 did not see release primarily because Volvo decided that the target market segment of the car was not enough to make production of the car lucrative. When Volvo later released the Volvo 140 series, the success of the series encouraged the car company to release the cancelled P358 as an extension model of the Volvo 140 series of cars. Thus, Volvo released the Volvo 164 in 1968. Although the Volvo 164 was released as an extension model of the Volvo 140 series, the car had several major differences compared to the Volvo 140 car models. First off, the design of the front section of the car was very much unlike the Volvo 140 car models. The Volvo 164 features a differently styled hood, foregoing the boxier styling of the Volvo 140 series and opting for a more curved hood with Wolsely 6/99 reminiscent four element frontal lights and large grille. The Volvo 164 was also the first entry of Volvo into the luxury vehicle segment. It featured a dashboard of faux wood and leather upholstery as an option. A major difference between the Volvo 140 model lineup and the Volvo 164 was the engine used for the cars. Whereas all Volvo 140 models were four cylinder engines, the Volvo 164 engine was a straight 6 3.0 litre B30 engine. The B30 was a derivative of the reliable B20 engine which was used in many Volvo car models. The B30 engine featured six cylinders whereas the B20 engine was a four cylinder engine. Among Volvo car models, the Volvo 164 was the first Volvo model to be equipped with a 6 cylinder engine since the Volvo PV800 ended production ten years earlier, in 1958. To accommodate the larger engine of the Volvo 164, the car received a more lengthened front compared to the Volvo 140 series. From the cowl of the car up to its rear, however, the car used the same sheetmetal components as the Volvo 140 models. The transmission options available for the Volvo 164 were a four speed manual, a three speed automatic and a four speed manual transmission which had an overdrive feature. For car buyers, the main reason to buy a Volvo 164 would be for its classic appeal. Aside from that, the Volvo 164 is also well known for being a solid performer on the road which makes it a good choice for car buyers who want a classic car that can still handle decent road usage. .
