Volvo Personvagnar AB is a Swedish automobile manufacturing company that has been in existence since 1927 with its headquarters in the city of Gothenberg. Its name is derived from the Latin word which means “I roll”. It is famed for producing models ranging from SUVs, wagons, and sedans to compact executive sedans and coupes that is distributed all over the world via its 2500 dealerships. Ford Motor Company currently owns it and sixty percent of its market is based in Europe, the other thirty in the United States and the rest all over the world. In 1927, the Volvo trademark was introduced and use as a brand of automobiles. The first Volvo car known as the OV 4 left the company’s assembly line on April 14, 1927 and was introduced in the market. The first cars were a range of closed cars and cabriolets designed for the specific terrain and needs of the Swedish market. From then on, all of their cars have managed to present an image of solidity in reliability. In 1944, they have introduced the laminated glass in their PV model. In 1958, an engineer in Volvo invented and Nils Bohlin invented the 3-point safety belt that has been a trademark of all cars in 1959. In the late 1956, they have introduced the padded dashboards in their car products. Eight years after, they have introduced the first rear-facing child seat and twelve years after, its very own booster seat. All these innovations are geared towards the safety of all passengers – young and old alike. In 1986, they were the first company to introduce the first central high-mounted stoplight, which eventually became a federally mandated innovation of all cars in the US that same year. Their model 960 introduced the first three-point seat belt for the middle of the rear seat and a child safety cushion integrated in the middle armrest. In 1991, they have introduced the SIPS or the Side Impact Protection System that channeled the force of a side impact away from the doors and into the safety cage. In 1995, the added the side airbags in all their models as added protection. Three years later, they again pioneered the head protecting airbag. That same year, they have made the WHIPS or the Whiplash Protection System - safety device to prevent injury of front seat users during collisions. In 2004, the BLIS system – a means of detecting vehicles entering the Volvo's blind spot with a side view mirror mounted sensor and alerts the driver with a light – was introduced. There have been numerous state-of-the art-innovations in the recent years including the extra stiff door-mounted inflatable side curtains, Personal Car Communicator (PCC) remote control and the Adaptive cruise control (ACC) with Collision Warning and Brake Support.
The famous Volvo models include the S80, the C70, the XC90 and V50. The S80 is a high-end car with one of the world's highest crash test ratings in the world for over 5 years. The C70 is a two-door car that came in there varieties: a coupe, a softop convertible and a retractable hardtop. The XC90 is a mid-sized crossover that won the North American Car of the Year award and Motor Trend magazine's Sport/Utility of the Year for 2003. Lastly, V50 is their version of a station wagon.
The future models of Volvo include large cars with model names S60, XC60, and the XC90. The XC90 is a mid-sized crossover that will be a model for the year 2009. The XC60 is another model for the year 2009 that is a spacious sports utility vehicle. Lastly, the S60 will be a newer version of the model set to the hit the markets by 2010.
