The Mercury Villager was a minivan sold by Mercury which is a luxury car market division of the Ford Motor Company. The Mercury Villager had great success on its first few years of sales but sales for later years proved unimpressive. The Mercury Villager was a part of a joint venture project between Nissan and the Ford Motor Company. The stated goal for the project as the production of a stylish and smaller sized minivan to be a competitor in the traditional minivan segment of the market. The product of the joint venture was the Mercury Villager and the Nissan Quest. Both of these vehicles were first introduced during the North American International Auto Show held in Detroit in 1992. Both cars were just about mechanically the same. However, there were some aesthetic details which set the Mercury Villager apart from the Nissan Quest. One of the most prominent was the inclusion of a light bar between the headlights of the Mercury Villager which was a traditional feature of Mercury vehicles at the time. At the introduction of the Mercury Villager during the 1992 North American International Auto Show, the minivan received warm reviews and was one of the most anticipated car models. Upon the release of the vehicle to the American car market, the Mercury Villager proved to be a high seller for Mercury. However, as the years passed, the Mercury Villager soon became aged and, by the later years of the 1990s, the Mercury Villager had been outstripped by more competitive models from other car makers. By 2002, the Mercury Villager was discontinued and replaced by the Mercury Monterey, an upscale version of the Ford Freestar. Notable, Nissan continued development with the Nissan Quest. The latest versions of the Mercury Villager are the 1999 to 2002 Mercury Villagers. These Mercury Villagers were also the second generation of the vehicle. The second generation Mercury Villager minivan received several updates from the earlier models of the vehicle. The light bar in between the headlights had been removed and, instead of a three door minivan layout, second generation Mercury Villager was offered as a four door minivan. The layout still remained in front engine front wheel drive layout. The engine had been changed to a more capable 3.3 litre V6 engine with an output of 180hp, an upgrade from the original 3.0 litre V6 engine which had an output of 151 hp. The transmission was still the singular 4 speed automatic transmission. The Mercury Villager delivered average acceleration performance but lost power at higher speeds giving problematic passing acceleration. The suspension of the vehicle was about average for its class. Handling and steering was one of the better points of the vehicle, giving good maneuverability and excellent overall handling. The fuel consumption of the Mercury Villager was below class average. The Mercury Villager was a good vehicle in its time but that time has passed. For a second hand option, the Mercury Villager is also outclassed with other available second hand minivans. .
