The Lincoln Versailles was a mid size luxury car made by Lincoln, the luxury division of the Ford Motor Company. The Lincoln Versailles was a marketing disaster for Lincoln. The Lincoln Versailles was the rushed response of the Lincoln car company to the success of Cadillac's Cadillac Seville, a direct competitor to Lincoln. The Cadillac Seville was actually a redesigned Chevrolet Nova and it was big seller on the American car market. In response, Lincoln rushed their own mid size luxury model, basing it on the Ford Granada. Ford had always taken car to make the car that Lincoln produced as distinct as possible from other car models. The Lincoln rarely shared platforms with other Ford models and, when they did, Lincoln was dutiful in hiding the fact from its customers. However, the Lincoln Versailles was unmistakable to car buyers as a prettied up version of the Ford Granada. In fairness to Lincoln, the car company did try to pretty up the car, adding several touches to the car that made it more akin to the Lincoln line of cars than to Ford. The basic features available for the car were more numerous and more luxurious as well. However, the ploy did not work in Lincoln's favor and, though sales of the Lincoln Versailles did increase for a time, it eventually decreased and did not rise again. The Lincoln Versailles was pulled from production in 1980 and Lincoln did not release a new luxury car model until 1982 with the resized Lincoln Continental. The Lincoln Versailles was the first mid size car produced by Lincoln. It was based on the Ford Granada and shared several mechanical features with that Ford model. Lincoln did add several design changes to the car so that it would not be seen as related to the Ford Granada. The Lincoln Versailles was given a grille reminiscent of Lincoln car models. The wheels were also changed to be more in line with those that were found on Lincoln car models. Even the trunk lid of the Lincoln Versailles was given a hump which was a common signature among Lincoln car models. However, most car buyers were not fooled. It was obvious that the doors and windows of the two cars were similar and were actually interchangeable. In fact, the midsection of the Lincoln Versailles was virtually similar to the Ford Granada. Lincoln did introduce a few interesting items in the features of the Lincoln Versailles which distanced it from the Ford Granada. The Lincoln Versailles was the first car to feature halogen for its headlights. It was also the first to use clearcoat paint which soon became common in the automotive industry. These features were one of the more convincing selling points of the Lincoln Versailles and it helped sales somewhat. Still, when buyers considered that the Ford Granada was about half the price of the Lincoln Versailles and both were very much the same vehicle, the buyers skipped the Lincoln Versailles. The Lincoln Versailles is available today only as a second hand model. Interest in the Lincoln Versailles is increasing mainly due to the rarity of the car. Thus price for the vehicle may be higher than most other second hand cars. Practical buyers will want to consider the age and the lack of replacement parts of the car. Related Bookmarks
