General Motors have rolled marquees as holistic brand bearers and that can be best exemplified by Chevrolet. It produced more than one entry for every level and filled each class as innovations come. Among its known class entries are from compact cars to commercial passenger trucks. Chevrolet maintained a great deal of creativeness, especially with its smaller car trim lines. This can be best exemplified by the Chevrolet Vega that made its way in the subcompact class in 1971 as 2-door coupe, 3-door station wagon, and 4-door hatchback. All are in FR layout and GM H-body platform that made it famous in all its time from the year 1971 to 77.
The Chevrolet Vega debuted as a brainchild of the ‘Big Three’ that includes GM, Ford, and Chrysler. It is to compete directly with successful Asian, European, and American major automakers in the booming market of subcompacts. It easily grabbed attention in its class for its conventional four-cylinder rear-wheel drive layout and unibody but rather unique bulk to the United States car enthusiasts. An original to Vega was the vertically shipped nose down design. It has fill caps in the battery to prevent leaks during travel and special railings known as ‘Vert-A-Pac’ hangers.
To further elevate the performance and reliability of Chevrolet Vega, it uses stamped upper and lower A-arms as front suspension with solid axle that features coil springs as well as stamped steel lower control arms in its rear. Later, in 1976, a Panhard rod becomes a significant addition to its rear suspension. A torque arm that connects its differential housing to the transmission’s tailshaft housing was also added to it. Some of its sub models like GT and Cosworth Twin-Cam made a worthwhile addition of front and rear roll bars together with stiffer springs.
A very important characteristic of an outstanding automobile is its efficient use of fuel, and the Chevrolet Vega had proven this in its early use of in-tank fuel pump that is more prevalent in the fuel injected vehicles today. That is one indication that the Chevrolet early embarked on economic yet high performance road machines for better mobility of the riding and driving public. It is therefore not a waste of money for its models because of the best value it offers the public. True to that, the Vega is still a dominant brand in the industry from then to these modern days.
