The Toyota Van was a minivan produced by Toyota Motor Company from 1984 up to 1989. The Toyota Van featured a number of unconventional features which made it a popular choice for van enthusiasts. Although the van was discontinued in 1989, the Toyota Van still enjoys popularity among enthusiasts to this day.
The Toyota Van was first produced in 1984 and was distributed by Toyota through a number of car markets all over the world. Unlike the Toyota LiteAce and the Toyota TownAce, the Toyota Van featured a larger body and also had a different body design. The Toyota Van was set to compete with the vans that were the top models in the van market of the United States car market. The Toyota Van was marketed under a number of names worldwide. In its home market, Japan, it was known as the Toyota Master Ace. In the European car market, it was known as the Toyota Space Cruiser. In the Australian car market, it was known as the Toyota Tarago. In Sweden, it was known as the Toyota Model F. In the North American car market, it was simply called the Toyota Van although some press materials referred to the vehicle as the Toyota VanWagon. The Toyota Van received mixed reactions among car buyers. It did receive respectable sales but Toyota decided to stop production of the car by 1989 and it was replaced by the Toyota Previa by 1990.
The Toyota Van was a 3 door van classified as a minivan. It had a front mid engine rear wheel drive layout but it was also available as a four wheel drive vehicle. The engines used on the Toyota Van were a 2.0 litre engine and a 2.2 litre engine. Transmission was either a 4 speed automatic or a 5 speed manual transmission. The Toyota Van was available in either a passenger trim or a cargo trim. The cargo or CRG trim was known as the Cargo Van. The passenger trim was further subdivided into the DLX and LE trims. The features of the Toyota Van included captain chairs, fog lights, dual air conditioning and captain chairs. Other features available also included a refrigerator which was located inside the floor boards between the front seats. The LE or Luxury Edition trim of the Toyota Van had power mirrors, bumpers and front grills color matched to the body and chrome emblems. The Toyota Van had an engine layout similar to a cab over truck. This means that the driver of the vehicle was virtually seated on top of the engine. This made for an uncomfortable ride as the engine noise and vibration was sure to penetrate into the cabin. However, it did give the Toyota Van a tighter turning circle making it a more agile vehicle.
The Toyota Van enjoys a large following, especially the four wheel drive version. For people who are interested in a van, the Toyota Van certainly offers an interesting option. It is one of the more agile vans available and its low pricing due to its old age is sure to be a good selling point.
