The Isuzu Trooper was a mid size SUV produced by Isuzu from 1981 up to 2003. The Isuzu Trooper is one of the vehicles with the longest production period in Isuzu and was considered to be one of the best off road vehicles in its time.

The Isuzu Trooper certainly has a long history of production in Isuzu. At the start, the Isuzu Trooper was made to be a tough off roader which was quite popular at the time. When it was first produced, the Isuzu Trooper was severely underpowered and unimpressive. However, as the car production continued, the Isuzu Trooper was updated and given a better choice of engines and a more luxurious set of features. The Isuzu Trooper went through two generations of production and was sold to a number of car markets all over the world. The first generation of the Isuzu Trooper is widely considered to be the weaker models of the Isuzu Trooper while the second generation models are the more luxurious, powerful and capable versions of the SUV. The first generation of the Isuzu Trooper saw production from 1981 to 1991. During this ten year period, the Isuzu Trooper was still developing itself to be a competent SUV and off roader. In 1992, the Isuzu Trooper went through a redesign. This is the start of the second generation of the Isuzu Trooper which ultimately ended in 2002 when the Isuzu Trooper line of cars were ultimately ended. The Isuzu Trooper was relatively successful and won several off road races including the Australian Safari, the Pharaoh's Rally and the Paris-Dakar Rally. The 1995 to 1997 models of the Isuzu Trooper were severely criticized, however and were tagged as "Not Acceptable" by the American magazine Consumer Reports. According to the magazine, the Isuzu Trooper was prone to tipping in certain situations.

Although the first models of the Isuzu Trooper were considered to be underpowered and unimpressive, the Trooper eventually made itself into a better overall SUV. The first engines available for the Isuzu Trooper was 2.6 litre I4 engine which did not have enough hp output for the Isuzu Trooper to perform well. By the second generation of the Isuzu Trooper, it already sported more powerful V6 engines which made the Trooper very popular as a capable off roader. In terms of luxury, the Isuzu Trooper also started out small and eventually made itself big. The Isuzu Trooper was a capable off roader and could handle bumps and rough roads quite well. Handling for the Isuzu Trooper was also quite impressive, precise and responsive with forgivable body lean on turns.

The Isuzu Trooper really should have done better than it did. It is argued by many that the demise of the Trooper was due to bad publicity and, given the impressive performance of the Isuzu Trooper on the road and off it, may just be true. This is not to say that the Isuzu Trooper is the best SUV out there. Certainly there are better but, for those who are looking for a second hander SUV, the Isuzu Trooper is a prime choice.
