The Mercury Tracer was a vehicle manufactured by Mercury and intended to compete in the compact car market segment of the American car markets. Mercury is an upscale car model division of the Ford Motor Company. The Mercury Tracer was a generally average seller for Mercury.

The Mercury Tracer was first sold in 1988. The car replaced the Mercury Lynx. With the compact market dominated by car imports, the Mercury Tracer had its work cut out for it. The Mercury Tracer was essentially a rebadged version of the Ford Escort which is also based on the Ford Laser. The Ford Laser was a Ford car model sold in the Asian markets as well as in Australia. Interestingly, the Ford Laser was also a vehicle which was based on a Mazda platform, the Mazda 323. The Mercury Tracer did not quite snatch the compact car market from the dominant car models of the segment. The Mercury Tracer only received adequate sales which proved strong enough for the Mercury Tracer to soldier on to the 1990s. After several revisions and updates, the 1990s version of the Mercury Tracer became a more refined vehicle with a better performance package and a more distinctive personality. However, this still did not entice car buyers to the Mercury Tracer lineup and the car was discontinued in 1999.

The Mercury Tracer was originally offered as a subcompact car but constant redesigns soon placed the Mercury on the compact car segment. However, up to its discontinuation, the Mercury Tracer still remained as the smallest vehicle model available from Mercury. The last versions of the Mercury Tracer were the 1997 to 1999 model of the vehicle. These were the third generation of the Mercury Tracer. The third generation Mercury Tracer was available as either a four door sedan or a five door station wagon. Earlier generations of the Mercury Tracer featured a hatchback car body. The third generation Mercury Tracer had a front engine front wheel drive layout which was the standard for all Mercury Tracer cars. The engine of the third generation Mercury Tracer was an SPI 2000 2.0 litre I4 engine. The available transmissions for the car were a 5 speed manual transmission and a 4 speed automatic transmission. On the road, the third generation Mercury Tracer had decent acceleration performance. The engine proved to be quite impressive at lower speeds which aided the performance of the automatic transmission. The automatic transmission featured smooth shifting, giving smooth up shifts on acceleration and quick downshifts for passing power and for deceleration. The manual transmission, however gives better performance for the vehicle. The fuel economy of the third generation Mercury Tracer was quite impressive with the manual transmission versions giving out the best fuel efficiency ratings. The Mercury Tracer also had a well done suspensions which gave the car a smooth ride and good bump absorption. Steering and handling for the car was solid but not particularly sporty.

The Mercury Tracer would make for a good daily driver for its combination of comfort and fuel efficiency. In terms of style, it's not so impressive but that's a minor consideration for those who want a solid, dependable, fuel efficient vehicle.
