The Mercury Topaz was a compact car market segment entry from the upscale car market division of the Ford Motor Company, the Mercury. The car sold well enough for its first few years of production but was a slow seller later one which led to its eventual discontinuation after a ten year run. Another Ford vehicle rebadging, the Mercury Topaz was the more luxury oriented version of the Ford Tempo. The car was first introduced in 1994 and it replaced the Mercury Zephyr on the compact car line up of Mercury. The Mercury Mystique, like its Ford Tempo cousin, borrowed a lot of design ideas from the Ford Escort though the Mercury Topaz was a bigger car which lessened the similar mechanical components that it had with the Ford Export. The Mercury Topaz also carried many features which was rare on Ford made vehicles at the time but which soon became standard features for future Ford and Mercury vehicles. The Mercury Topaz featured a very aerodynamic car body design which was not very common at the time. This gave the car a lower drag coefficient which translated to better fuel economy for the car. It also offered SRS airbags though these were optional features as well as a more fuel efficient diesel engine which considerably increased the mpg rating of the car. The car also had a four way power driver seat and power lumbar support. While the earlier versions of the Mercury Topaz sold reasonably well, the later models experienced slow sales despite several updates made by Mercury. The car was eventually discontinued in 1995. The Mercury Mystique replaced the car in the Mercury car lineup. The Mercury Topaz compact vehicle was available as either a two door coupe or as a four door sedan. The car had a front engine front wheel drive layout but was also available in an all wheel drive layout. There were several engines available for the car. For the later generation of the Mercury, the engines available were a HSC 2.3 litre I4 engine, a HSO 2.3 litre engine and a Vulcan V6 3.0 litre engine. The HSC and HSO engines were carried over from the previous pre-1988 versions of the car. The pre-1988 Mercury Topaz also featured a Mazda RF 2.0 litre I4 diesel engine. The transmissions available for the later versions of the car included two different choices of 5 speed manual transmissions and a 3 speed automatic transmission. On the road, the Mercury Topaz performed adequately. The I4 gasoline engines were less powerful and gave the vehicle an underpowered feel in certain situations. The V6 version performed much better in powering the car. The earlier versions of the Mercury Topaz which carried diesel engines had an impressive fuel consumption rating. The other versions had about average fuel consumption with the V6 engined versions proving to be the gas guzzlers of the lineup. The 3 speed automatic transmission was one of the worst features of the car with too quick up shifts and very hesitant down shifts. The suspension was a bit on the stiff side. Handling was good enough for its class. The Mercury Topaz is not exactly a car that a car buyer will enjoy. However, car buyers on a budget will be impressed if they find a diesel engined, fuel thrifty Mercury Topaz. Other than that, there is nothing overly impressive about the Mercury Topaz. Lastly, avoid the three speed automatic. . Headlights by State: ______________________
