From 1978 up to 1999, Toyota Motors Company sold the Toyota Tercel under the subcompact car market segment. The car was first made available in the United States in 1980. Although not as saleable as the other models of Toyota, the Toyota Tercel still made an appreciable market impact which is why the car was in production for over 20 years. The Toyota Tercel was produced as a subcompact by Toyota starting from 1978. The first versions of the car was sold in Japan at first. It was later imported to the United States in 1980. The Toyota Tercel was available in a number of body trims including a 2 door coupe, 3 door hatchback and 4 door sedan among others. The Toyota Tercel was first introduced as the Toyota Corolla Tercel. This was done in an attempt by Toyota to attract buyers to the car by connecting it with the highly popular Toyota Corolla car model. The size of the Toyota Tercel placed it in between the larger Toyota Corolla and the smaller, subcompact Toyota Starlet. The 'Tercel' marque was meant to indicate the reduced size of the Toyota Tercel compared to the Toyota Corolla since 'Tercel' in Latin stands for 'one third'. The Toyota Tercel also holds the distinction of being the first vehicle to feature a front wheel drive system to be made by Toyota. The Toyota Tercel was always known to be a commuter vehicle. Its smaller size and higher fuel economy made it an attractive option for car buyers who wanted a simple daily driver with low pricing and low after market expenses. These were exactly what the Toyota Tercel specialized in and, throughout the gas conscious years of the 1980s, the Toyota Tercel sold in respectable numbers. By the 1990s, the market had outgrown the Toyota Tercel and the car was replaced by the Toyota Echo. The first versions of the Toyota Tercel were specifically made for fuel economy and reliability. Thus, the car was smaller than most of its competitors and featured a lighter body and a smaller engine. The engines available for the first versions of the Toyota Tercel was a 1.5 litre I4 engine with an output of 60 hp. Since that time, the Toyota Tercel went through five generations of production. Throughout its production years, the Toyota Tercel had its engine further upgraded for an increase in output and the size of the car grew significantly as well. The last version of the Toyota Tercel, the fifth generation of the car which ended with the 1999 model, still had a 1.5 litre engine but it had been modified to provide an output of 93 hp. The car still had a front engine front wheel drive layout. Transmissions available were a 3 speed automatic, a 4 speed automatic, a 4 speed manual and a 5 speed manual transmission. On the road, the Toyota Tercel was no power house with its low power engine. The automatic transmission proved to be a slow shifter especially when shifting down. The manual transmission made the car slightly more responsive. The suspension of the Toyota Tercel was also quite lively and handling was below average. In tight corners, the car loses its grip quite easily. Fuel economy was one of the strong points of the car and was one of the reasons for its respectable sales. The Toyota Tercel is a perfect car for those on a budget. Its low price and high fuel economy is its strong points. Its weak points is its budget car features.
