The GMC Syclone was made as a high performance version of the ongoing GMC Sonoma pick up truck. The Syclone offers higher performance than the GMC Sonoma GT, a higher performance edition of the Sonoma made in the same year. The Syclone is a pickup truck that can deliver the same handling and performance produced by a sports car. The GMC Syclone was only produced in 1991 and this model initiated and was replaced by the production of the GMC Typhoon in 1992-1993. The Typhoon that replaced the Syclone in production lines shared the same power with the Syclone. In one production year in 1991, a total of 2,995 Syclone units were made and three more were built in the following year. Both the Syclone and the Typhoon models together with the Sonoma GT are made by the Production Automotive Services in Troy, Michigan for the GMC. The Syclones generally used the 4.3-liter turbocharged LB4 V6 engine that is capable of 280 hp and the 4-speed 700R4 automatic transmission. During its introduction, the Syclone was considered as the world’s quickest stock pickup truck. Auto magazines like the Car and Driver magazine compared its extra quick acceleration to some sports cars like the Corvette and even the Ferrari. The new Syclone can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. The Syclone’s features such as the turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, 4 wheel anti-lock brakes, and the four-wheel drive system are the common features found in Porsche not in pickup trucks. The turbocharger used in Syclone and Typhoon trucks is a Mitsubishi TD06-17C 8 cm2 that was used with the Garrett water/air intercooler. The 4WD system used in this model is the split type Borg Warner system that splits the torque into 35-65 front-rear ratios. All the 1991 models of the Syclone were available only in black color. The 1992 models that were designed with wider color options were cancelled after finishing only three units. The 1991 Syclones were offered with two special editions, the Marlboro Syclone and the Indy Syclone. These editions were mainly used in races and in promotions. The Marlboro Syclone was produced with 10 modifications made by the American Sunroof Corporation (ASC) and Philip Morris, Inc. Larry Shinoda who designed the Boss Mustang and the Corvette Stingray did most of the modification designs in the 10 original black Syclones. The Indy Syclones were also made and used in the Indianapolis 500 race. Three Indy Syclones that were modified as sticker packages joined in the said race that was held on May 24, 1992. Owning a GMC Syclone is like having a sports car and a pickup truck at the same time. Its size is capable of hauling loads that are much heavier than the loads that can be carried by an ordinary pickup truck of its size. Without a load the Syclones can also be used in races because of its sports car like performance and handling capabilities. The used 1991 GMC Syclones still reflect good figures in terms of sales and performance. Related Bookmarks
