For the 1999 model year, Ford introduced the all-new F-250 thru F-750 Super Duty truck. The F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 were based on the same frame with various differences. However, the F-650 and F-750 were based on another frame. And although the super Duty line may have some semblance to the F-150, it actually does not share any of the F-150 design or build characteristics. These Heavy Duty trucks have GVWR ranging from 8,000 lbs to 19,000 lbs. or even more and were made available to compete with the 3-door Chevy and Dodge’s 4-door Ram Quad Cab. The new Super Duty Series have several available engines: the 260 hp 5.4 L Modular V8 engine and 350 lb-ft of torque was standard, while the 310 hp 6.8 L Modular V10 engine and 425 lb-ft of torque was an option. Four transmissions were available for the Super Duty trucks: a standard 5-speed manual transmission and an optional 4R100 4-speed automatic were available for the gas engines, Ands for the diesel engines, a standard 6-speed manual transmission was offered with an optional 5-speed automatic. Ford also developed a cooling system for both their V8 and V10 truck engines. The “Fail-Safe Cooling System protects the engine in the event of coolant loss by switching the engine to an “emergency limp-home mode. In this case, the only half of the cylinders is fueled to moderate the power and in turn lessen the heat release. Despite the moderated power, the engine can still travel a fair distance, enough to probably get help or even to a repair facility. By 2001, three cab options became available: the 2-door Standard Cab is only available with the 8 in bed can accommodate two to three passengers; the Super Cab with 2 reverse-opening small rear doors (4 doors) accommodates five to six passengers; the Crew Cab with 4 full doors can seat four to six people. Both the Super and Crew cabs came with 6ľ-foot and 8-foot full-size bed options. By 2003, the 235 hp 7.3 L Power Stroke Diesel V engine with and 500 lb-ft of torque was upped to 250 hp and 525 ft lbs of torque. At the same time, the 325 hp 6.0 L Power Stroke Diesel V8 engine which had a 560 lb-ft of torque was introduced. And as a result, the 4-speed automatic was replaced by the new Torqshift 5-speed 5R110 automatic transmission. When Ford realized the at least 80% of the Super Duties were used for towing heavy trailers on a regular basis, the company revamped the series for 2005. The rear suspension on all models uses a 10.5-inch Sterling 35-spline axle with an array of either conventional or limited-slip. All models have heavy duty 3" wide leaf springs and staggered shock absorbers. A standard stabilizer bar was placed on DRW (dual rear wheel) models, while an optional slide-in camper certification package with heavier springs and an optional stabilizer bar package became available on SRW (single rear wheel) models. The gas engines were also upgraded, turning the 2-valve per cylinder into the new 3 valve. As a result, 5.4L V8 engine now generated 300 hp, while the 6.8L V10 rated at 362 hp. The 6.0L Powerstroke Diesel was also modified, boosting torque from 560 ft·lbf to 570 ft·lbf. However, power stayed at only 325 hp. In 2008 was the year for the third generation of the Super Duty Series, a new 6.4 L twin-turbo Power Stroke Diesel V8 replaced the 6.0 L Power Stroke Diesel V8 engine rated at 350 hp and with 650 ft·lbf of torque. At the same time, the new F-450 with a regular truck bed was released. It is capable of carrying over 3 tons and tows 24,000 lbs when equipped with a 5th wheel and 4.88 rear axle. The 2008 Super Duty line includes the F-250, F-350, and of course, the new F-450. The model lineup for the F-250 & F-350 Super Duty is the XL, XLT, Lariat, FX4, and the King Ranch, while the model lineup for the F-450 Super Duty is the XL, XLT, and the Lariat. The same two gas engines are carried over and rated exactly the same from the 2nd generation. Ford introduces its all new optional "Rapid-Heat Supplemental Cab Heater," only available on Super Duty trucks with the Diesel engine and TorqShift automatic transmission. All in all, these trucks are ideal for large, heavily built pick up trucks with heavy duty body-on-frame steel frames, very powerful engines that are ideal for commercial and industrial use. Naturally, most buyers of these trucks include horse breeders, people in the construction business, people who usually travel with large campers. However, these trucks are not only limited to these lot. This would also be an excellent choice for people who simply love to drive an extra rugged, high capacity vehicle with great comfort and ease.
