The Pontiac Sunbird was a line of compact and subcompact car models. The car was introduced in 1976. Sales for the car during its production period were generally good though, during the last few years of production, the car had begun to sell slowly. The Pontiac Sunbird was one of the first subcompacts introduced by Pontiac into the market as an attempt to regain sales after the debacle of the 1970s oil shortage problem and the resulting decline in interest in Pontiac car models. The car was first introduced in 1975 as a 1976 car model. In its first generation, the Pontiac Sunbird had a rear wheel drive layout, similar to the traditional layout of Pontiac car models. The car was not an original design of Pontiac but was actually a rebadged model based on the Chevrolet Monza. The Chevrolet Monza was also based on the Chevrolet Vega and was considered as the sportier version of the car. The Pontiac Sunbird was Pontiac's answer to the increasing popularity of import subcompacts such as the Toyota Celica as well as to the subcompacts marketed by General Motor's primary competitor, Ford. The car sold relatively well during its introduction and Pontiac kept the car for production. In total, the Pontiac Sunbird was in production for 18 years. Its production ended in 1995 when it was replaced by the Pontiac Sunfire. The Pontiac Sunbird was renamed as the Pontiac J2000 in 1982 and, along with the marque change, the car also became a front wheel drive layout car. In 1983, the "J" prefix of the name was removed because Pontiac wanted to market the car as a smaller version of the similarly styled Pontiac 6000. A GT version of the car was also available starting from the middle of 1980s up to the early 1990s. The GT line was ended in 1993 as Pontiac consolidated the car model line. Although the Pontiac Sunbird offered good road performance, it was way beyond what Pontiac car models used to be. This was primarily because of restrictions placed by the government on emissions as well as the need for a more fuel efficient car design. The older, more powerful Pontiac car models were well known for their high fuel consumption. The first generation Pontiac Sunbird was sold as a two door coupe, a two door station wagon and as a three door hatchback. It was built on General Motor's H-body platform and it had a front engine rear wheel drive layout. The engines available for the car were the 2300 140 CID I4, the Iron Duke 151 CID I4, the Buick 231 CID V6 and the Chevrolet 205 CID V8 engines. The second generation of the car had been moved to the J-body platform and had become front engine front wheel drive vehicles. The available body makes were a two door convertible, a two door coupe, a three door hatchback, a 4 door station wagon and a 4 door sedan. The Pontiac Sunbird had a long production run primarily because of the reliability of the vehicle. Earlier versions of the car are also approaching classic status. .
