The Isuzu Stylus was a subcompact sedan released by Isuzu in 1990 and was produced until 1993. The car received low market sales which is why the Isuzu Stylus received a very short production period.
The Isuzu Stylus was based on the long running Isuzu Gemini car models manufactured by Isuzu. The Isuzu Gemini was first introduced in 1974 and went through several changes and was renamed several times throughout its production period. In 1990, the Isuzu Gemini went through a redesign and, along with the Gemini Coupe, a 4 door sedan based on the Isuzu Gemini was introduced which was named the Isuzu Stylus. This model was only available in the Canadian and the United States car markets. The design of the Isuzu Stylus was based on the Saturn S-Series design of GM which was rejected by GM in 1985 and was given to Isuzu for the Stylus. Marketed as a subcompact sedan, the Isuzu Stylus made little market impact in its market category. When Isuzu made a deal with Honda for a mutual purchase of car models, Isuzu bought the Honda Civic which effectively replaced the Isuzu Stylus and ended the line of Isuzu Gemini car models.
The Isuzu Stylus was unimpressive as a subcompact sedan. The car was available with a 4 cylinder 1.6 litre engine with its base model which was considered to be underpowered with its output of 95 hp. The transmissions available were a five speed manual transmission and a 3 speed automatic transmission. Aside from the base model, the Isuzu Stylus was also available in an XS trim which greatly improved the performance of the car. The Isuzu Stylus XS model featured a dual overhead cam engine capable of 125 hp. Transmission available for this trim was only the 5 speed manual transmission. The XS model also boasted of several features not included with the base S model of the Isuzu Stylus. This included four wheel disc brakes, power steering and firmer suspension. One of the most impressive points of the Isuzu Stylus was its nimble handling. It also had great fuel economy as well. The Isuzu Stylus S trim was severely underpowered. The XS model performs much better in terms of acceleration and power. The Isuzu Stylus was also prone to noise and had inadequate cabin space, specially in the rear seating area.
The Isuzu Stylus could definitely have been made better. The car simply was not up to the competition in its time. About the only winning factor for an Isuzu Stylus purchase now would be its economical fuel consumption which, admittedly is becoming a prime factor with today's gasoline prices. Still, there are more capable car models out there so there is really little reason to buy this particular car model. Headlights by State: ______________________
