The Toyota Starlet was a subcompact made by Japanese car maker Toyota from the years 1973 to 1999. The car replaced the Toyota Publica. The Toyota Starlet was only available in the United States car market for a short time, from 1981 up to 1984.The Toyota Starlet is quite a popular car in most other international car markets. Its production run of 26 years, from 1973 to 1999, is typical for a Toyota model. Its short, 4 year run in the United States car market makes it a rare vehicle in the United States, however. The Toyota Starlet was considered to be a microcar in some car markets and a subcompact in others. The first versions of the car resembled a Toyota Corolla, albeit drastically shortened and resized smaller. It was available in several layouts including a 4 door sedan, a 3 door wagon and a 2 door sedan. While the Toyota Starlet received market success in most other car markets, it was not as successful in the United States market which led to its short market run and eventual replacement. The Toyota Starlet has a reputation of being an economical and dependable vehicle. However, its small size and relatively low power made it less than adequate for anything other than city running. The Toyota Starlet was a typical compact vehicle. The car had a very low weight and typically low power engine. The first versions of the vehicle were available with either a 1000 or a 1200 cc engine. The version sold in the United States featured a front engine rear wheel drive layout. The engines were Toyota's 2k, 3k, and 4k engines. The suspension of the Toyota Starlet used a four link suspension for the rear wheels and a McPherson strut suspension for the front wheels. The Toyota Starlet had modest features. It had electronic ignition, rust resistant plastic lined front fenders and power disc brakes. The Toyota Starlet performed well on the road. Its low power engine proved to be more than enough to give the car good acceleration mainly due to the light weight of the car. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the Toyota Starlet was its amazing fuel economy which was rated at 38 mpg for city driving and 52 mpg for highway driving. This was only for the first U.S. imported version of the vehicle. In succeeding models, the Toyota Starlet further increased its fuel economy. Its high fuel economy was specifically marketed by Toyota for the advantage of the car. During the time, gas prices were also on the rise. The Toyota Starlet was also quite reliable and durable like most other Toyota cars, lasting several years with little to no repairs needed which was surprising for a vehicle in its class. For those who are very concerned with the impossible high price of gasoline, the Toyota Starlet presents a very viable option. Its not as expensive as the hybrids of today and yet it offers fuel economy that is almost on par. Headlights by State: ______________________
