The GMC Sonoma is a compact pickup from GMC serving as the fraternal twin of the Chevrolet S-10. The twin pickups share common features and the same upgrades or changes in their designs. The GMC Sonoma and the Chevrolet S-10 can keep up with their competitors such as the Ford Explorer Sport Trac, Ford Ranger, Dodge Dakota, Mazda B-Series, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma.
The GMC Sonoma was originally badged the GMC S-15 that was introduced in 1982 with the same features as the Chevrolet S-10. The two just differ in the grille design and in some minor trim designs. The S-15 was initially offered with engine options that include the 84-hp 1.9-liter 4-cycle Vin A, and the 110-hp 2.8-liter V6 or Vin B. The first generation S-15 constantly received different changes every year same with the S-10 changes that included the power upgrade to the 4.3-liter V6 in 1988 and the introduction of the anti-lock brakes in the rear wheels in 1989. The name GMC Sonoma was first used in 1991 with the dropping of the High Sierra trim and changing of the Sierra Classic trim into an SLE. The Sonoma GT debuted in 1992 as a regular cab in short-bed two-wheel drives using a high-output 4.3-liter V6 and 4WD with electronic-shift transfer. The production of first generation Sonoma was stopped in 1993 and the second generation just followed right after in 1994. The new generation has a redesigned interior and body plus made 10-inch longer than the first generation.
The GMC Sonoma is currently available with a variety of body styles that include the two-door Regular Cab, the three-door Extended Cab and the four-door Crew Cab. The Crew Cab is the most famous with its very comfortable and spacious interior that matches those of the sedan cars. The crew cab was offered in Vortec 4300 V6 engine, 4WD, SLS trim, and with 4L60-E 4-speed electronic auto-transmission. The other body styles are available in two- and 4-wheel drive options with two engine choices in any of the three transmissions matched with the four different suspension settings. The engine choices are the 120-hp 2.2-liter 4-cylinder engine and the 190 hp 4.3-liter V6. The transmission choices include the MW 2 5-speed manual in Vortec 2200, the M50 5-speed manual in Vortec 4300, and the 4L60-E 4-speed automatic. All Sonoma models feature an air-conditioning unit, a tachometer, and an extender for the rear cargo bed. The models that are delivered to Montana, Alaska, Minnesota, and North and South Dakota are equipped with the Cold Climate package. The Sonomas are also equipped with delayed lightings in the interior that delays the shutting off of the dome light for 15 minutes after the door was closed. The sound system was improved with the use of the state-of-the-art audio systems that have different unique advance equipments and features depending on the trim level of the model.
