The Hyundai car brand has definitely gone a long way. The new Hyundai Sonata is proof positive that the car maker is doing everything it can to raise its place in the American car market. The Hyundai Sonata is a front engine, front drive mid size 4 door sedan. While starting off low and humble, the Hyundai Sonata has definitely taken its place in the car market and, if the new Sonata is any indication of things to come, it will definitely be challenging the market leaders anytime soon. The Hyundai Sonata first came into the American market in 1988 riding on the early successes of the Hyundai Excel. Offered at very low prices, the Hyundai Sonata was seen as a good option for those who wanted a family car with a lower price tag than the cars that were dominating the market at the time. Early sales of the Hyundai Sonata were positive but reports of mechanical problems began to undermine the car's early successes. Numerous reports of mechanical problems ranging from the transmission to the engine to a very noisy interior pulled the Hyundai Sonata's sales down. Market perception of the Hyundai Sonata along with all of the cars in the Hyundai line up soon dropped and many potential car buyers stayed away from the brand. Yet, Hyundai kept on with their production and corrected the many problems that the Hyundai Sonata and other Hyundai cars were experiencing. Thus, from its beginnings up to now, the quality of the Hyundai Sonata has been constantly getting better and better. The latest Hyundai Sonata models are gaining acceptance with the car buying crowd. Quite a number of car buyers are still skeptical about the car however but Hyundai has upped the ante by introducing a better package for their car, giving the Hyundai Sonata one of the biggest cabin spaces in its class, achieving high safety ratings and offering the Hyundai Sonata on of the lowest price for its class. It also helps that Hyundai Sonata has acknowledged most car buyer's concerns about the mechanical reliability of the car and is offering the Hyundai Sonata with a very impressive 5 year/60,000 miles basic warranty and 10 year/100,000 miles drivetrain warranty. The latest Hyundai Sonata, the 2009 model is powered by either a Theta II engine or a Lambda V6 engine. The Theta II engine is a 2.4 litre engine that outputs 175 hp and has a fuel efficiency of 22 mpg for city and 32 mpg for highway driving. The more powerful Lambda V6 engine is a 3.3 litre engine with an output of 249 hp. Fuel efficiency of the V6 is at 19 for city and 29 for highway driving. The 2009 Hyundai Sonata has received plenty of updates and features a more luxurious experience. The inside of the car which is still as spacious as ever, features blue black lighting and plenty of chrome accents on the well thought out center console. Wood furnishings are also tastefully added on the car's steering wheel and shift gear. Performance wise, the Hyundai Sonata is a stable performer though it won't be catching up with its competitors anytime soon. The acceleration is adequate, not flashy and the car handling can be a bit unstable when pushed hard. The SE trim of the Sonata which gives it a suspension upgrade generally solves this problem, however. The high gas mileage of the car definitely wins it points but the in-cabin noise from the wheels and the engine does not. The Hyundai Sonata is definitely a car to add to the comparison list of cars to buy. Hyundai has made definite improvements in this car model and, although the Hyundai Sonata does not exactly stand out from the crowd, it performs quite well. .
