The Toyota Sienna is the minivan entrant of Japanese car maker Toyota in the United States market. It was first built in 1998 and is still in production up to the present. The Toyota Sienna is among the top selling minivans in the United States market.
After Toyota discontinued the Toyota Previa, it needed a minivan in its vehicle lineup. The Toyota Sienna has the same platform with the Toyota Camry. It also has the same engine as well. Toyota corrected its mistake with the mid engined Toyota Previa, the predecessor of the Toyota Sienna and featured a more conventional front engine front drive layout for the vehicle. The Toyota Sienna was originally smaller than its predecessor the Toyota Previa. However, updates soon resized the vehicle and made it a larger and more spacious model. The Toyota Sienna is built in the United States and is set for exportation to other emerging car markets such as China. In most other car markets, the minivan presence of Toyota is maintained by the Toyota Previa which is unavailable in the United States car market. For most car buyers, the main attraction of the Toyota Sienna is its large space and the optional all wheel drive. It also benefits from the popularity of Toyota car models for their reliability and durability. Due to the recent increase in fuel prices, Toyota Sienna sales are getting hit because of the class average fuel consumption of the vehicle. There have been rumors that the next version of the Toyota Sienna will be offering a hybrid option.
The Toyota Sienna offers adequate power for every purpose. Designed as a robust and powerful hauler, the vehicle features V6 engines in all its models. The newer versions of the Toyota Sienna uses the VVT-i technology of Toyota for a boost in power output. The transmission of the vehicle is available as 4 speed automatic for older models and 5 speed automatic for newer models. Based on an extended version of the Toyota Camry platform, the Toyota Sienna shares several mechanical features as the Camry. On the road, the Toyota Sienna offers a responsive and sensible ride. Even with the available AWD option, the Toyota Sienna can easily put power on the pavement. The transmission of the Toyota Sienna is also well done, operating with not a hint of gear hunting. The suspension of the vehicle can handle most road bumps, though bigger ones will induce some bounce. Cornering is adequate but does lean on quick, tight turns. Its nothing unexpected from a minivan vehicle, though. Handling is also adequately responsive though not quite nimble. Again, it is a minivan which also excuses it from its relatively difficult parking stance.
The Toyota Sienna is a good choice for a minivan vehicle, if such a vehicle is really needed. Buyers will have to consider their options more carefully though, what with the Toyota Sienna class's high fuel consumption and the unstable oil markets which has brought the price of fuel to record highs.
