The Mercury Sable is currently a mid size luxury sedan made by Mercury which makes upmarket car models for the Ford Motor Company. The Mercury Sable has had two production periods. The first production period Mercury Sable vehicles were first released in 1986 and were discontinued by 2005. These Mercury Sable vehicles were basically the same car as the Ford Taurus. Both cars contained about the same mechanical features. The Mercury Sable was, however marketed as a more upscale vehicle compared to the Ford Taurus. This meant that the Mercury Sable had a more luxurious feature set than the Ford Taurus and carried a higher price tag as well. During the 1990s, Ford did not have a market proper mid size vehicle in the American car market. This was a significant lack in the lineup of vehicles under Ford. To correct this mistake, Ford made the Ford Taurus to fill in the gap in the mid size luxury car market. A Mercury version of the car was also introduced which was the Mercury Sable. The Mercury Sable proved to be one of the most influential vehicles in the American car industry. This is primarily due to the then futuristic design of the vehicle which was soon copied by other car makers. Soon, the less boxy, more flowing 'aero' look that the Mercury Sable first featured became the norm for American cars. During the first years of introduction of the first production period Mercury Sable vehicles, sales were impressive. However, later versions of the Mercury Sable met a constant decline in sales numbers which effectively ended the production run of the Mercury Sable in 2005. In 2008, Ford decided to revive the Mercury Sable car marque by renaming the Mercury Montego as the Mercury Sable in an attempt to increase the market presence of the car. The last of the first production Mercury Sable vehicles was the 2005 Mercury Sable model. Although originally available as both a four wheel sedan and a 4 door station wagon, Mercury dropped the 4 door station wagon layout for the 2005 model of the vehicle. The 2005 Mercury Stable retained the front engine front wheel drive layout of the Mercury Sable line. Two engines were available with the vehicle. The Vulcan 3.0 litre V6 engine was the less powerful option with an output of 155 hp. The Duratec 3.0 litre V6 engine had better power output at 200 hp. The only available transmission was a 4 speed automatic transmission. On the road, the V6 engines provided quick acceleration for the car but the 155 hp Vulcan engine lost power at higher speeds where the 200 hp Duratec engine could give even more. The automatic shifting was smooth and on the spot. The ride of the 2005 was a bit stiffer than the competition making for a bouncy ride. The handling was solid with adequate steering response and minimal body lean on turns. The Mercury Sable is no leader in its car market segment. The car does performer acceptably but it cannot compete with its market segment's leaders. Furthermore, for the amount of upscale features that the Mercury Sable offers, it still can't quite distance itself from its Ford Taurus roots. Buyers on a budget are better off going for the Taurus for its lower price tag and similar functionality. . Headlights by State: ______________________
