The Subaru SVX was a mid size sports coupe manufactured by Subaru, the passenger car division of Fuji Heavy Industries. The Subaru SVX sold well enough during the first few years of its release. However, in later years, demand for the car dropped sharply so that Subaru discontinued the Subaru SVX car line after the 1997 sales period.
The Subaru SVX was known as the Subaru Alcyone in its home market of Japan. It was a mid size GT coupe and was the first attempt of Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company of Subaru, in manufacturing a luxury high performance vehicle. The Subaru SVX was effectively the first luxury sports car entry of Subaru. The Alcyone naming of the Subaru SVX in its home market is based on the Alcyone star, the brightest star of the Pleiades star cluster which is the basis of the Subaru logo. The Subaru SVX was first brought into the United States car market in 1991 and was sold as a 1992 car model. The Japanese car market introduction of the Subaru SVX came later that year. The Subaru SVX featured a curved and smooth body designed by Giugiaro. The car was well received on its introduction, even though the Subaru SVX was the priciest car that Subaru had ever made at the time and despite the economic recession that the United States was experiencing during its release. However, the sales of the Subaru SVX never really reached the estimated unit sales per year of Subaru. In the later years of its production, sales for the Subaru SVX began to slow down until its lowest point during the 1997 sales period. This led to the discontinuation of the car. Estimates of the total cost of production against the total sales of the vehicle show that Subaru actually lost money for selling the Subaru SVX. Subaru however considers the Subaru SVX a success despite its sales failure because of the increased awareness that the car generated about the quality and innovation of Subaru car models.
The Giorgetto Giugiaro designed Subaru SVX featured a curvy and aircraft derived design which differentiated the car from the angular car designs which were prevalent at the time. The highly aerodynamic shape of the Subaru SVX gave the car an impressive drag coefficient of .29cd. One of the most interesting design cues of the Subaru SVX was its "glass to glass canopy" which featured a two piece power side window. The side windows of the Subaru SVX was split at about two thirds from the bottom to the top. This is a common design cue for exotic car models such as the Lamborghini Countach and the De Lorean DMC-12. The engine used in Subaru SVX was the "BOXER" EG33 3.3 litre horizontally opposed Flat-6 engine which gave car a power output of 230 hp. The engine of the Subaru SVX was the largest engine ever made by Subaru for a passenger vehicle. This lasted until the production of the EZ36 BOXER 3.6 litre engine used in the 2008 Subaru Tribeca.
As a sports car, the Subaru SVX was among the top in its time and still offers an impressive performance package today. Currently, the car is available only as second hand models. Headlights by State: ______________________
