The Acura SLX was the first entry of the Acura car company to the SUV class. It was sold during 1996 to 1999. The Acura SLX was a market failure and was quickly discontinued after only three years of flagging sales. The Acura SLX was quickly replaced by the Acura MDX, a more capable vehicle.
Of all its vehicles, the Acura SLX is most probably the one vehicle that the Acura would like to take back. The vehicle was such a failure that it can only be described as the exact polar opposite of the Acura NSX. The Acura SLX is actually a rebranded Isuzu Trooper. It was the result of an ill advised attempt of the Acura company to get into the SUV market by rebranding an already established vehicle. As a result, the Acura SLX received very bad reviews and sales flagged embarassingly. Even though Acura tried to pretty up the Acura SLX, adding luxury features and generally making the Acura SLX more appetizing for SUV consumers, the obvious Isuzu Trooper lines of the Acura SLX just stood out too much. Added to this was the abysmal safety performance of the Acura SLX. According to Consumer Reports, the Acura SLX was an unacceptable vehicle. The SUV had a dangerous tendency to roll over during its testing. In fairness, Isuzu has challenged he statement of the magazine for being untruthful. However, actual drivers of the Acura SLX still find its performance terrible. Coupled with the bad press, it is no wonder that the Acura SLX was ultimately pulled out from production and replaced with the Acura MDX.
In terms of technical performance, the Acura SLX is very similar to the Isuzi trooper. The 1996-1997 model of the Acura SLX was given a 3.2 litre V6 gasoline engine which could produce a maximum of 190 hp. The 1998 model was upgraded to a 3.5 litre V6 engine with dual overhead cams which produce 215 hp. Unlike the Isuzu Trooper, the Acura SLX was only offered with automatic transmissions. It had 4 wheel drive, 4 wheel anti-lock breaks, power windows, power doors and dual airbags. The Acura SLX also offered a premium package which included heated power front seats as well as leather upholstery. Many drivers found the Acura SLX to be too unstable for safe driving. The vehicle had a tall, thin profile and was reported to easily tip over. In highway driving, the Acura SLX has also been reported to drift and is generally very dangerous to drive at high speeds.
The Acura SLX was discontinued for a reason. It is not the best effort produced by Acura. It is mediocre at best and dangerously unstable at worst. The Acura SLX is also just an Isuzu Trooper with a face lift. Given the safety issues of the car and its relative lack of followers, there is very little reason why anyone should purchase and Acura SLX. Owners of the Acura SLX are, unfortunately, saddled with a vehicle that nobody really wants and the resale market for the Acura SLX is dismal at best. Headlights by State: ______________________
