The name Volvo has always been a permanent fixture in the realm of luxury cars. The automobile company's latest contribution, the S80, is a subtle departure from the Swedish carmaker's trademark habits. The S80 is somewhat the rebel among luxury vehicles. It is so, primarily because the S80 so willingly puts aside the luxury and flawless performance inherent in the cars within its class. However, in place of such amenities are the state-of-the-art safety features and interior technology embedded into the vehicle. Despite the relatively sub par accommodations and mediocre road performance, the S80 does excel where safety is concerned. Volvo's four-door sedan is arguably one of the safest rides out in the market. Add to that is the fact that the S80 is a 5-year record holder for topping the safety test charts.The production of the Volvo S80 took place in its company headquarters in Sweden and soon made a debut in the car market in 1998. It was the highly anticipated successor of the rear-wheel S90. The Volvo S80s adapted platform was a definite indicator that this was a vehicle slated for the high-end brackets of car buyers. With the designation of being the automakers main attraction, the S80 certainly had a lot on its plate. This is evident in the long list of noticeable traits that this sedan showcases. For one, the vehicle is a holder of three firsts for its kind. One was that the S80 was the first car with a built-in GSM phone, which came with a hands-free feature. Second was it was the first to utilize transverse mounting for its powerhouse. And third was that the S80 was the first car in the world to pay attention to matters pertaining to the environment. Fuel economy, textile-based allergens, and a cars life cycle were points that the S80 clearly addressed. The S80 likewise came with a hefty bulk of safety systems that were sure to put its occupants in good hands. The earliest generation of the S80, manufactured from 1999-2006, largely based its platform on the Volvo P2. This vehicle has the same dimensions and core values as its current version. And lastly, the V8 comes with a larger 4.4L V8 engine that rides in 6-speed automatic and drives with a 5.9 second 0-60mph acceleration run, in all-wheel drive. The Volvo S80 seats are all decked-out with the works: leather seats, wood trimmings, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and powered seats. Optional specs include Volvos own Four-C adaptive suspension (a staple feature in the sport package kind), a 12-speaker Dynaudio system, an integrated entertainment system, and a remote-controlled navigation system. This recent line of S80s did not abandon its predecessors reputation for security. Aside from the standard safety features in the initial models, the newer ones do offer a couple of notable software programs such as the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), which uses warning lights to alert the driver of an incoming vehicle that registers on the blind spot of the S80. The Personal Car Communicator (PCC) features a transponder that has a heartbeat sensor that warns the car owner if there is a person inside the vehicle even if the cars alarm had already gone off. While the Volvo S80 may fall short in road performance and overall elegance present in its competition, the S80s reliable a top-notch safety features are its most endearing points.
