The Toyota Previa is an MPV or multi purpose vehicle manufactured by Toyota. The vehicle was first produced in 1990 and is still in continuous production up to the present. However, the Toyota Previa was only available in the United States car market until 1997.

The Toyota Previa was imported into the United States to be a competitor in the highly successful minivan market of the United States. At the time, the leaders of the minivan car market were entrants from Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth. Upon its release, the Toyota Previa proved to be a successful vehicle and immediately became a common sight in United States roads. Although the Toyota Previa never actually challenged the class leaders in the minivan market, it did prove to be a viable option as a minivan and was a consistent good seller from the Toyota lineup. The Toyota Previa was ultimately discontinued in the United States car market after 1997. However, it is still sold in other car markets. In the United States, the Toyota Previa was replaced by the Toyota Sienna. The Toyota Previa had a number of low points compared to its competitors. For a Toyota vehicle, the Toyota Previa had a very low fuel economy. It was also relatively expensive as well. However, it offered a very large space and the driver's view was very clear at an almost 360 degree angle.

The Toyota Previa featured an unconventional mid engine design. The engine was located underneath the front seats of the Toyota Previa. It was skewed a little to one side to avoid adding bulges to the floor. This mid engine design of the Toyota Previa prevented any upgrades to a larger engine for the vehicle. This was very detrimental to the vehicle as the Toyota Previa was underpowered compared to its competitors. Toyota solved the problem by adding a supercharger to the engine which provided additional power for the vehicle. At first, the supercharger was an option available for the LE trim of the Toyota Previa. It soon became standard for the vehicle and the normally aspirated version was discontinued. The engine available for the Toyota Previa was a 4 cylinder2.4 litre engine. The transmissions available were either a 4 speed automatic or a 5 speed manual transmission. The Toyota Previa was available either as a rear wheel drive vehicle or as a permanent 4 wheel drive vehicle using the All-Tracs system of Toyota. The Toyota Previa ran reasonably well on the road. Acceleration was not as brisk as its the top competitors of its class but the automatic transmission of the Toyota Previa was rarely caught hunting. Handling was also responsive. The high profile of the vehicle did make it prone to body lean on tight turns. Fuel economy was not one of the best in Toyota car models.

The Toyota Previa makes for a good family car. However, it offers nothing special. Its competitors offer better features than it carries. It also has an unimpressive fuel economy, unusual for a Toyota vehicle. All in all, a buyer would be better served with another car model than with a Toyota Previa.
