Plymouth is another popular marquee of a famed automobile maker. It first started its operations in the year 1928; however, all models had to be discontinued by the year 2001. Predominantly based in the United States of the America, this brand is market under Chrysler Corporation and DaimlerChrysler. Its products are cars of all types and minivans manufactured mainly in their headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan and in various factories all over the States. Before it closed down, it stands by the slogan One clever idea after another which the company coined in the late 1990s. The first automobile under the Plymouth marquee was introduced in July 7, 1928 in an attempt to penetrate the low-priced market dominated by Chevrolet and Ford. Although priced a bit higher than the competition, what made the brand an instant hit are the added features like the hydraulic brakes they have provided in their cars which the other do not. Their cars facial features and design can be traced back to the Maxwell models in the past when Walter Chrysler took over the troubled company in the early 1920s. The logo, with the rearview of the Mayflower being featured in Plymouth Rock, has been consistently there and even giving rise to the brands name. The Great Depression in the 1930s did not waiver the consistent popularity of the brand in their niche in the market. In fact, they even ensured the steady rise of the Chrysler brand despite the difficult times. In 1939 alone, they have produced 417,528 vehicles, of which 5,967 were roadsters, or two-door convertibles with rumble seats. In the 1940s, they even surpassed Ford and became the second most popular automobile manufacturer in the US. Throughout the years, the dependability, durability and engineering connected with the brand has been unsurpassed. In 1956, they introduced the Forward look styling theme that propelled their production to its ultimate high in 1957 at 726,009, about 200,000 more than 1956. The 1960s saw the slow decline of the popularity of this brand. This can be attributed to poor styling and awkward models they have released in the years 1959 to 1962. However, they have regained the third spot in overall sales in their market during the years of 1971 to 1974 owing to their Valiant and Duster compact models. They have also returned to making full-sized vehicles with contemporary styling. When they joined the popular badge engineering, their sales declined even more. Most of their 1980s models like the Acclaim, Laser, Neon, and Breeze, were badge-engineered versions of Chrysler, Dodge, or Mitsubishi models. Due to this and a number of other reasons, Chrysler dropped the brand in 2001. The more popular models of Plymouth in the past include the Valiant, the Duster, the Voyager, and the Reliant. The Valiant was a compact car recognized to be one of the best all-around domestic cars by Road and Track. The Duster was a semi-fastback version of the Valiant. The Reliant and Voyager, on the other hand, helped the company from figuring into a full bankruptcy. The Plymouth marquee has already been stopped in 2001. Future models are less likely to pop. However, we must realize that with the changing times of the motoring business, this company may have had a second chance.
