Who would have thought that a company that started it business on pepper, salt and coffee would end up as becoming one of the most popular car brands in the world today? That just happened to Peugeot, an integral component of the PSA Peugeot Citroën. They have gone a long way since its inception and have become the second largest vehicle manufacturer in Europe. It is headquartered in Paris, Avenue de la Grande Armée, close to Porte Maillot and the Concorde Lafayette Hotel. However, they have maintained a factory in Sochax, France where the family business originated and built a museum there aptly called, the Peugeot Museum.
As early as 1800’s, the Peugeot family comprised of Valentigney, Montbeliard, Franche-Comte, and France has began manufacturing coffee grinders. A descendant, by the name of Armand, had a penchance for automobiles and bicycles. In 1882, he introduced his first range of bicycles via his "Le Grand Bi" penny-farthing. However, he still wanted to ultimately make automobiles. In 1889, with the help of Gottlieb Daimler, he produced the first steam-powered Peugeot automobile. As the years went by, he produced more and more models with the help of Daimler. In 1896, as a stroke of independence, he built his first car under a Peugeot engine. He formed his own company solely dedicated into making cars known as Société Anonyme des Automobiles Peugeot with a factory in Audincort. He manufactured several cars years after with simple yet quality innovations. In the First World War, operations had to be based on what the war needed and the company became a major supplier of arms and military vehicles, from bicycles to tanks and shells. Through it all, the cars have been significant stars in various racing competitions. In 1919, his driver George Bolliot won the Targa Florio. In the 1920’s, the split between the motor and auto divisions happened. In 1929, they produced one of the cheapest cars in the French market – the 201. This has started the trademark of the company’s model of having a zero in the middle out of three digits. After that, the great depression affected the company but was able to ounce back with its 1929 model. In 1946, they produced the 203 that has set a new sales record that ha slated until the 1960’s. In 1950, they took over Chenard-Walcker and bought a part of Hotchkiss. In 1958, they began to expand their market in the US. In 1975, they took over Citroën after a year of buying 30% of its shares. The new company became the PSA (Peugeot Société Anonyme) group in an effort to keep separate identities for both the Peugeot and Citroën brands. In 1978, they took over the European division of Chrysler and renamed the brand Talbot that lasted until 1992. In the early 1990’s, their sales in North America have faltered. They tried to integrate newer products; however, their efforts proved to be futile. By then, they had to close down their sales in America and Canada. Currently, it is still a popular brand in Europe with a market in Mexico.
The more popular Peugeot models include the 205, 206 and 505. The 205 is a supermini adjudged as the Car of the Decade by CAR magazine in 1990. The 206 is a subcompact car produced since 1998. The 505, on the other hand is an executive car.
Future Peugeot models include a diesel-electric hybrid version of the 307, a 407 car to be released in the year 2008 and a 2-door cabriolet that will become one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the whole world.
There is no stopping the dominance of Peugeot. From a simple coffee grinders maker, it has become one of the superpowers in the motoring industry. It is only right to expect more from them out of their future models. Headlights by State: ______________________
