The Oldsmobile 88 was a long running full size vehicle made by General Motors under their Oldsmobile division. The Oldsmobile 88 sold well in the car markets and was one of the longest running car model lines of Oldsmobile.
The first release of the Oldsmobile 88 or Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight was in 1949. The car was in production for fifty years with production ending only in 1999. Throughout its production period, the Oldsmobile 88 served as an image leader of Oldsmobile. This is especially true for the earlier versions of the Oldsmobile. During its initial release, the Oldsmobile 88 belonged among the top performing car models of the time. At the time, the Oldsmobile 88 was a complementary model of the Oldsmobile 76 and the Oldsmobile 98. The car used a smaller, lighter body compared to the Oldsmobile 98 but was given the engine used for the Oldsmobile 98. This gave the Oldsmobile 88 an impressive performance profile so that it is now considered as one of the first muscle cars ever made. Since it was released in 1949, the Oldsmobile 88 was one of the fastest selling car models of Oldsmobile. It was also sold as several other Oldsmobile car models during its production period such as the Oldsmobile Starfire, the Oldsmobile Delta, the Oldsmobile Celebrity and the Oldsmobile Royale.
The Oldsmobile 88 has gone through eleven generations throughout its fifty years of production. Since it was first introduced in 1949, the Oldsmobile 88 has been produced through a wide range of mechanical components and have evolved to accommodate the preference of the times when it was produced. The first generation of the Oldsmobile 88, first manufactured in 1949, was available as a 2 door hardtop, a 4 door hardtop, a 2 door coupe and a 4 door sedan. It featured a front engine rear wheel drive layout. The engine used in the first generation Oldsmobile 88 was a 303 cubic inch V8 engine which was considered to be one of the most powerful engine at the time. The available transmissions for the car were a 2 speed automatic transmission and a 3 speed manual transmission. By contrast, the eleventh generation of the Oldsmobile 88, the last production model of the Oldsmobile 88 which ended in 1999, was available only as a 4 door sedan. The car had a front engine front wheel drive layout. The engine used for the eleventh generation Oldsmobile 88 was the Buick 3.8 litre V6 engine and the transmission use was the 4T60-E 4-speed automatic transmission.
The Oldsmoblie 88, as one of the top car model lines of Oldsmobile, has always featured quality build and plenty of features to suit any car buyer's need. The older versions of the Oldsmobile 88 are now considered as classic cars. These are usually very difficult to find in the car market nowadays and what is available will most likely be priced quite high. The later models are more readily available in the second hand car markets, however. For second hand car buyers, the later models of the Oldsmobile 88 presents a compelling buy. However, it is not the best daily driver to have, what with the large engine of the car which is known to be fuel hungry. Headlights by State: ______________________
