Oldsmobile is another famed automotive marquee of the motoring giant general Motors Corporation. For the most of its existence, since its inception in 1897, it has been a prominent figure in the GMC line of cars. It was founded by Ransom E. Olds and has lasted over 107 years of existence. Upon the last production of this brand in April 2004, they have produced about 35.2 million cars where a greater part of it was built in their Lansing, Michigan factory. As of date, it is by far, the oldest existing American brand of automobiles and the third oldest in the world.
The first Oldsmobile cars were built in Lansing, Michigan when American, Ransom E. Olds, decided to built his own automobile firm, the Olds Motor Vehicle Company, in 1897. For the next years, they have become the top-selling car company in US. However, the owner ran into some financial difficulties, forcing him to sell the company to General Motors. From 1901 to 1904, the first design known as Curved Dash became the first mass-produced vehicle in the whole US. By then, the cars were officially known as “Olds automobiles” but were colloquially more popular as “Oldsmobile” after a popular 1905 song. From then on, the colloquial term became the official name of the company and all its products. In 1910, they produced the Limited Touring – one of the most popular models of that time. In 1937, they pioneered the introduction of the four-speed semi-automatic transmission called the "Automatic Safety Transmission". In 1940, the again introduced another industry first - offering a fully automatic transmission, called the Hydramatic, which featured four forward speeds. After the war, in the year of 1949, they pioneered the rocket engine. It used an overhead valve V-8 design rather than the flathead "straight-8" design – the powerful during that time favoring even the racecar drivers. In the 1950’s, there were several innovations done including the stylized front fascias and quad-headlights. In 1960’s, they even introduced a few more industry including the first turbocharged engine in 1962, and the first modern front-wheel drive car – the 1966 Toronado. During the 1970’s and the 1980’s, its sales soared to greater heights. The Cutlass series became the bestseller in 1976. They reached their top sales gross in 1985 reaching as many as 1,066,122 cars sold. These amazing developments can be attributed to popular designs, positive reviews from critics and the perceived quality and reliability of the Rocket V8 engine. Their sales went into a lull in the early 1990’s but recovered during the middle of the decade. However, 2000 saw the plummet of theirsales leading to their eventual close in April 29, 2004.
The more popular Oldsmobile cras include the Cutlass, the Toronado and the Alero. The Cutlass was first introduced in 1961 as a unibody compact car. It lasted until 199 and has undergone a lot of style changes. The Toronado is two-door coupe automobile that was a hit from 1966 to 1992. The Alero was a newer model to replace the Cutlass intorduced in 1998.
It has been common knowledge that Oldsmobile stopped its productions offcially on April 29, 2004.
Much to to the dismay of the motor enthusiasts, the closing of the brand was inevitable but who knows, Oldsmobile may resurface in the fiture and pop out to wow everyone with new and top-selling model.Headlights by State: ______________________
