The Mercury Mystique was a compact sedan sold by Ford Motor Company's upmarket badge, Mercury. The Mercury Mystique received only modest sales in the American car market. The Mercury Mystique was first available in the American car market in 2005. The car replaced the Mercury Topaz. The Mercury Mystique was rebadged version of the Ford Contour which was also the same car as the Ford Mondeo. Basically, the three cars have about the same mechanical features. However, the Mercury Mystique was positioned as an upmarket vehicle with more luxurious features and a higher price. The Mercury Mystique first became available in the American car market as a 1995 model year vehicle. Despite a more upscale positioning, the Mercury Mystique did not offer anything particularly interesting. While it differentiated itself from the Ford Contour with its more luxurious features, it did not provide anything that made it stand out in its market segment. This made the sales for the Mercury Mystique lower than expected. Originally available as either base model GS or upscale model LS, a more basic base model with a lower price tag was released two years after the first release of the Mercury Mystique in order to appeal to a wider car buying audience. Sales of the Mercury Mystique was not very impressive, though it remained one of Mercury's constant seller. Criticisms about the car include the small passenger room of the vehicle and the fact that the Mercury Mystique was a compact car that carried a price tag more fitting to a vehicle in the mid size car segment. The Mercury Mystique was discontinued in 2000. On the road, the Mercury Mystique was a solid performer. The only body style offered by the Mercury Mystique was a 4 door sedan body. The car had a front engine front wheel drive layout. There were two possible engines available for the Mercury Mystique, a lower powered Zetec 2.0 litre I4 engine and a more powerful Duratec 2.5 litre V6 engine. The transmissions available for the Mercury Mystique included a 5 speed manual transmission and a 4 speed automatic transmission. The performance of the Mercury Mystique was quite competitive in its class. The I4 engine was quite capable of propelling the vehicle to descent speeds and the V6 engine provided even more impressive power to the engine and was the better engine in terms of power and acceleration. The automatic transmission of the car shifted gears smoothly though it had some trouble with downshifting whenever more power and less speed was needed. The manual transmission could harness the power of the engine much better. The Mercury Mystique featured one of the best suspensions available in its class. Smooth riding was the norm and bump absorption was adequate. Handling and steering for the Mercury Mystique was quite impressive and the car was known for handling twists and turns admirably well. The Mercury Mystique would have been a good seller had it not been for its dubious market placement. Available today only from second hand dealers, the drastically lowered price of the car is making the Mercury Mystique interesting where once it was not. . Headlights by State:
