The Mercury Mountaineer is a mid size SUV or sport utility vehicle made by Mercury, a brand name which is owned by the Ford Motor Company. The Mercury Mountaineer has modest sales numbers in its market.

The Mercury Mountaineer is actually just a revised Ford Explorer and is actually the same car when it comes to its mechanical parts. However, like most Mercury rebrandings of Ford vehicles, the Mercury Mountaineer offers a more upscale set of features. A number of different visible design cues have also been introduced in the Mercury Mountaineer to differentiate the car from the Ford Explorer. For all the upscale trim that the Mercury Mountaineer got, the vehicle is also priced considerably higher than the similar Ford Explorer. The Mercury Mountaineer was actually a late comer in the mid size SUV market. The Ford Explorer had already been out for two years before its derivative, the Mercury Mountaineer was released. The Mercury Mountaineer got its first release in 1997. Sales were not as good as Mercury had anticipated basically because most buyers preferred the less luxurious yet similarly functional Ford Explorer. For its second year of release, the Mercury Mountaineer received several changes to further distance it from its Ford Explorer roots. The grill of the Mercury Mountaineer got turned upside down, its headlights were made smaller and the design of the wheel was changed to something more unique. For the second year, the sales of the Mercury Mountaineer picked up quite a bit but it was still far behind the Ford Explorer's yearly sales output. Today, the Mercury Mountaineer is still in production and sales for the vehicle has been relatively good.

Since its introduction, the Mercury Mountaineer has gone through three generations of car models. The latest generation of the Mercury Mountaineer first entered production in 2006. These third generation Mercury Mountaineers received either a Cologne 4.0 litre V6 engine or a 4.8 litre Modular V8. The available transmission is a 6 speed automatic transmission. This vehicle is available in either front engine rear wheel drive layout or all wheel drive layout. On the road, the Mercury Mountaineer performs quite well. While the V6 performs well enough for the vehicle, the V8 gives even better performance. The automatic transmission changes gears smoothly but may be late shifting from high gear when more power is needed. The suspension of the vehicle is among the best in its class, handling regular road bumps and even more serious ones with ease. The handling for the car is typical for a truck type vehicle. Drivers can't help but feel the heaviness of the vehicle and turns will generate some body lean. Fuel economy is one of the low points for the Mercury Mountaineer. It's quite fuel hungry and fuel efficiency is average to below average for its class.

The Mercury Mountaineer isn't quite a show stopper. What it is is a solid mid size SUV that does its job well and tries to look good in the process. However, it doesn't quite outshine the Ford Explorer and buyers should check out what a Ford Explorer has in store before going for a Mercury Mountaineer.
