The Pontiac Montana is a line of minivans made by the Pontiac division of General Motors. The car was also known as the Pontiac Trans Sport Montana for its earlier releases. Sales for the minivan in the United States car market have been unimpressive. In the Mexican and Canadian car market, the minivan sells quite well and is the reason why the it is still in production for these countries though they have been discontinued in the United States car market. The Pontiac Montana was originally sold as the Pontiac Trans Sport Montana and was first introduced as a 1997 model year vehicle. The Trans Sport marque was used for the minivan only for the 1997 and 1998 model years. The Pontiac Montana was actually a trim level offered for the Pontiac Trans Sport van. However, Pontiac decided to drop the Trans Sport marque and marketed the vehicle as its own model line. The earlier versions of the Pontiac Montana shared many similarities with the Vauxhall Sintra, the Opel Sintra, the Oldsmobile Silhouette, the Buick GL8 and the Chevrolet Venture. The Opel and Vauxhall versions were for European consumption only. Chevrolet also introduced the Chevrolet Trans Sport specifically for the European car market. The vehicle was virtually identical to the Pontiac Montana, the differences between the two vehicles being basically its badging. The Pontiac Montana was sold in two wheelbases, a standard and a long wheelbase layout. The Pontiac Montana also holds the distinction of being among the few minivan models that could seat eight passengers. A more upscale trim of the Pontiac Montana was also sold starting from 2002. This was the Pontiac Montana Thunder. This trim level of the minivan featured several trim specific features such as upgraded handling and ride packages, special "Thunder" trim badging and special chrome rims and roof rack spoilers. In 2006, the Pontiac Montana was discontinued for the United States car market primarily due to declining sales. Since the car still sold strongly in the Canadian and Mexican car market, Pontiac decided to continue selling the car model in those particular car markets. Production for these particular car markets are scheduled to end in 2009, however. Two generations of the Pontiac Montana were produced during its entire production period. The vehicle was available as either a front engine front wheel drive vehicle or as a four wheel drive vehicle throughout its two generations. It also remained in the U-body platform of General Motors during its production period as well. The first generation of the minivan was available as either a three door minivan or a four door minivan. The engine used was a V6 LA1 3.4 litre engine. In its second generation, the three door minivan car body option was dropped and the Pontiac Montana was available only as a four door minivan. The engines available were a V6 LX9 3.5 litre engine and a V6 LZ9 3.9 litre engine. The Canadian version of the minivan was also available with a V6 LGD 3.9 litre engine. The Pontiac Montana would be a solid buy for large families because of its large passenger capacity. The first generation of the minivan however has a bad crash testing score. The second generation had a much better score in crash tests. . Headlights by State: ______________________
