Mercury is another automobile marquee of the Ford motor company established in 1939 to market entry-level luxury cars. Such cars were ideally placed in between the high-end luxury cars of Lincoln and the normal cars of Ford. The name is derived from the Roman messenger to the Gods. This brand has been known for its superb performance. It services the countries and territories of United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Middle East selling cars under the platform of Ford models.
With its inception in 1939, Mercury had its own division in Ford Motor Company. However, in 1945, it was combined with Lincoln to form the Lincoln-Mercury division in efforts to make it a “junior Lincoln”. In 1949, it introduced a first in the series of new looks in every car in the Ford Company. In 1952, another revamp in its looks was also initiated. In 1958, it was combined short-lived Edsel cars forming the Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln Division. Starting in the late 50’s until the early 70’s, the company imposed new design modifications that were totally different from its mother company’s design in the form of these models: Turnpike Cruiser, Park Lane, Cougar and Marquis. The 1960 “Total Performance” era in the 1960’s, Mercury produced similar models that were at par with that of Ford’s. The models included the full-size S-55 Marauders, which shared the same body styles and mechanics as the Ford Galaxie 500/XL sports models. However, with the reintegration of their model cars features into the Ford’s fold, their image somewhat suffered. Despite that, they have managed to achieve their peak sales in 1978 at 580,000 cars of different models being sold. They almost repeated history in 1993 when they sold more than 480,000 units that years. However, the slip of their sales has been consistent in the recent years. In fact, there were years were they roughly only sold about 200, 000 units in a single year.
Among the famous models of Mercury were the models released in the recent years including the Milan, the Mariner and the reintroduced Sable. The Milan is a mid-sized sedan that is a close cousin of the Ford Fusion. It was first introduced and was unveiled at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show on February 9. On the other hand, the Mariner is compact SUV and a sibling of the Ford Escape. Lastly, the reintroduction of Sable in 2007 was done because of customer brand recognition. It was a sedan that ended its production in 2005.
An anticipated happening in 2009, the Mariner will have some interesting changes. Apart from having a hybrid version, the new powertrain of this particular model is expected to improve the EPA estimated fuel economy by 1 mile per gallon and increase horsepower by 11% to 170 horsepower. This are the only few innovations we expect from Mercury in the coming years. However, there have been speculations over the internet of Ford’s decision to close down the brand. Although this has been negated by a statement from Ford, still the issue does not seem to die down.
Let us just hope that the speculations are not true because Mercury is one brand that will surely be missed by the motoring public. Headlights by State: ______________________
