The Mercury Mariner is a vehicle produced by Mercury, the more upscale market division of the Ford Motor Company. The Mercury Mariner is a compact luxury SUV and is a modest seller for the Mercury line of cars.
The Mercury Mariner is a rebadged version of the Ford Escape. It therefore shares many similarities with the Ford Escape and the Mazda Tribute which also shares development with the Ford Escape. However, like most of the Ford rebadged vehicle models of Mercury, the Mercury Mariner offers a more upscale package than the Ford Escape. Mercury has always been considered as an upscale badge of Ford along with Lincoln. The Mercury Mariner is visually very identical to the Ford Escape. The differences between the two include a different front grille featuring Mercury's signature waterfall styled grill, a European styled turn signal repeater, monotone cladding and a two tone interior. The Mercury Mariner is the first car based SUV that Mercury has put to the market. A hybrid version of the Mercury Mariner, once again a rebadged version of the Ford Escape Hybrid, is also available. The sales of the Mercury Mariner have been modest. Car buyers recognize that the Mercury Mariner is simply a dressed up Ford Escape. The similarity of the vehicle to the Ford Escape as well as the high price tag of the car that does not account for the limited upscale features offered with the Mercury Mariner has made car buyers wary of the vehicle.
The Mercury Mariner shares a lot of its mechanical features with the Ford Escape. The basic engine available for the Mercury Mariner 2.3 litre I4 engine capable of an output of 153 hp. There is also an optional 3.0 litre V6 engine capable of an output of 200 hp. The available transmission is a 4 speed automatic. The Mercury Mariner is available as either a front wheel drive vehicle or an all wheel drive vehicle. Standard features for the Mercury MAriner include front side airbags, curtain side airbags, an antiskid system, ABS, traction control, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a navigation system and a rear obstacle detection system. The V6 engine of the Mercury Mariner provides a quicker acceleration profile for the vehicle while the I4 engine is not as quick. The transmission shifts smoothly on up shifts but can lag in down shifting when passing power is needed. The suspension is tuned to be sedan soft which helps the Mercury Mariner swallow most road imperfections. However, the softer suspension allows for some lean on corners. Steering is responsive and firm. Fuel economy is on the low side of the average for its class with the Mercury Mariner Hybrid doing much better.
The Mercury Mariner would be a competitive vehicle if it did not carry as high a price tag as it does. A Ford Escape derivative, the Mercury Mariner offers little upscale package features to compensate for its high price. Buyers need to look into the Ford Escape to see if the additional features of the Mercury Mariner is worth the higher price. Headlights by State: ______________________
