The Kia Magentis is a mid size sedan made by Kia Motors. The car is offered to different markets all over the world and is known by several nameplates such as the Kia Optima and the Kia Lotze. The Kia Magentis is more popularly know as the Kia Optima in the United States car markets. The car has been in production since 2001 up to the present. The first models of the Kia Optima, models 2001 up to 2005, were heavily based on the Hyundai Sonata, a sedan from the partner of Kia, Hyundai which is another Korean car maker. While earlier models were almost identical to the Hyundai Sonata, in 2003, 2004 and 2005, Kia changed a few of the external stylings of the Kia Optima to reflect its Kia roots. However, the internal components of the car was still based on the Hyundai Sonata. In 2006, Kia completely changed the Kia Optima. This time around, the car changed to the MG global platform of Kia, a platform it shared with the Kia Carens and the Kia Rondo. However, it still shared engines with the Hyundai Sonata. The latest model of the Kia Optima is the 2008 model with a 2009 model coming to dealer's showrooms by late 2008. Competing in a highly saturated market, the Kia Optima certainly has a lot to prove. The major advantage of the Kia Optima is its lower sticker price and better warranty offer. However, with other car makers offering extended warranty options, the Kia Optima is getting lesser of the market than it used to. The Kia Optima first came out based on the Hyundai Sonata and was a virtual twin of the car. The latest model of the Kia Optima, the 2008 model, still shares a lot of components with the Sonata. The Kia Optima is available in two trims, the LX and the EX trim models. The engines available for the car are either a 4 cylinder 2.4 litre engine capable of 162 hp or a V6 2.7 litre engine capable of 185hp. The transmission available for the car is either a five speed manual or a five speed automatic transmission. The basic features of the Kia Optima include traction control, an antiskid system, ABS and front side and curtain side airbags. The EX trim includes additional features such as sunroof and heated seats. The 4 litre engine performs just as well as the V6 for short and sedate, around town driving. On the highway, the V6 fairs much better, giving better passing power and speeds. The automatic transmission of the Kia Optima doesn't perform quite as well, however and can leave the driver wanting on sudden accelerations. Handling is acceptable but the suspension is surprisingly soft which affects steering and makes the car prone to wobble on serious road bumps. In the mid size sedan market, the Kia Optima is basically par for the course. Although a solid performer, there are far better models available from its competitors. However, the lower price tag of the Optima gives it a better chance in the market. Related Bookmarks
