The Toyota MR2 was a two seater sports car made by Toyota which was produced from 1984 up to 2007. The car was available in the North American car market up to 2004 only.
When the Toyota MR2 was first introduced, it surprised the car industry. Toyota had always been known for producing vehicles that were very practical and fuel economic. While the Toyota MR2 did have a surprisingly impressive fuel economy rating, it was an impractical car for everyday use. The original purpose for the design of the car was not to create a sports car but to create a car that was fun to drive yet very fuel efficient. The car was first shown in public during the 1983 Tokyo Motor Show. It had a huge impression on the press and the public. It was released under the name MR2 which was an abbreviation of "Midship Runabout 2-seater". Later models of the Toyota MR2 were called the MR2 Spyder in the North American car market. In the European car market it was called the Toyota MR2 Roadster. The Toyota MR2 was a mixture of success and failure. Even today, the Toyota MR2 enjoys great popularity among enthusiasts. This is because the Toyota MR2 offered a sporty performance at a reasonable price and a very low fuel consumption too. It is an every man's sports car. However, the Toyota MR2 was not a very practical vehicle. Its small size gave it very little room for baggage. It was also only a two seater which severely limited its passenger carrying capabilities.
The Toyota MR2 is the first ever mid engined vehicle built and extensively marketed by a Japanese car maker. This is one of the claims to fame of the car. The Toyota MR2 was a mid engined rear wheel driven vehicle. The car went through three generations during its production run of more than 20 years. The Toyota MR2 car models regularly received more powerful engines from Toyota than most of its other car models. Given the car's relatively low weight and rear wheel drive placement, this made the Toyota MR2 a very fun vehicle to drive on the road. The mid engine placement of the car also gave it better balance as well as improving power distribution of the car. In fact, due to the mid engine layout rear wheel drive layout of the Toyota MR2, it is often compared to high performance sports cars which often employ the same layout. Driving the Toyota MR2 is an enjoyable experience, though the sports tuned suspension can be lively when running over bumps. It is also a very agile and nimble car and features very responsive and quick steering. The placement of the engine means that it can be a little noisy inside the cabin, however. Rear visibility is also difficult for the Toyota MR2 when the top is down.
