The Acura MDX is a current crossover mid-sized SUV by the Acura company. The MDX has been in production since 2001 up to the present. The MDX in the Acura MDX's name stands for "Multi-Dimensional luXury" and the Acura MDX is the first crossover SUV to feature third row seating. Currently, the Acura MDX has proved to be a huge success and has overtaken the also popular Acura TL as the top seller of the Acura line of vehicles. The Acura MDX was first introduced as a 2001 car model in late 2000. It replaced the SLX, an unpopular SUV based on the Isuzu trooper which was a slow seller in the United States car markets. While introduced in the United States in 2001, the Acura MDX only went on sale in Japan and Australia in 2003 under the name Honda MDX. All Acura MDX models are built in Canada, in the Honda Manufacturing Ltd. in Alliston, Ontario. Since its release, the Acura MDX has proven to be a huge success for the Acura line of cars. The redesigned 2007 Acura MDX further established the MDX's primary place in the Acura car markets. The first units of the Acura MDX is based on the Global mid-size platform of Honda, the same platform used by the Acura TL and the Acura TSX. It was powered by the 3.5 litre J35A3 SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. In the Acura MDX models released in 2001 to 2002, the engine was capable of producing 240hp, applying 245 ft/lb of torque force at 3000 to 5000 rpm. The 2003 to 2006 models, on the other hand could produce 265hp with 253 ft/lb of torque force. One of the winning features of the Acura MDX is its automatic four wheel drive system called the VTM-4. This system allowed the Acura MDX to engage all four wheels of the vehicles when it detects slippage. The VTM-4 also had a "lock" system which would give the car continuous four wheel drive which helped in climbing steep grades. The VTM-4 is vastly different from the Honda CRV's real time AWD in that the VTM-4 attempts to detect slippage before it occurs while the CRV's system waits for slippage to occur before applying power auto correcting. In 2007, the Acura MDX went for a complete redesign which vastly improved the MDX's body and wheel base, giving it a slicker, more slip streamed look. It's engine was also upgraded to a 3.7 litre V6 tuned to provide 300 hp and 275 lb/ft of torque force. Current estimates also give the Acura MDX a gas mileage of 15 miles to the gallon in city driving and 20 in highway driving. The Acura MDX also has its share of mechanical difficulties. So far, most of the problems of the Acura MDX hav been isolated cases. However, the 2001 and 2002 automatic transmission Acura MDX models did suffer from transmission problems similar to those of the Acura Cl and Acura TL. The MDX did not get the extended warranty offered to the CL and TL models. The Acura MDX is quite a success for a mid sized crossover SUV. It provides solid handling and plenty of safety features, making it a great option for a family car. The transmission problems of the past models of the Acura MDX seems to have gone away and the new Acura MDX is performing up to and beyond standards which makes it a good vehicle for a first buy. Second hand Acura MDX models may not be as valuable and some models may have the aforementioned transmission problems. Headlights by State: ______________________
