The BMW M5 was made by the BMW as a high-performance version of the BMW 5-Series models. The development of the M5 Series was a responsibility of the BMW Motorsport Division thus carrying their M badge. The M5 models are available in E28, E34, E39, and E60 platforms. The M5 was identified as the worlds fastest production sedan car during its introduction. The M5 belongs to the mid-size luxury car or executive car class and was in production since 1985 up to present. The M5 was first launched in 1984 at the Amsterdam Motor Show. The initial production of the M5 was mainly hand-built and the original models sit in 535i chassis using the modified BMW M1 engine. The first M5 was the E28 M5 sitting in the BMW E28 platform and using the 3.5-liter I6 that is capable of delivering 286 horsepower engine output. The E28 M5 was in production from 1985-1988 where 96 units were assembled in kit form in Rosslyn, South Africa at the BMW Plant and the rest of the E28 M5 are hand-built in Garching, Germany by the BMW Motorsport. The E28 M5 was available as a 4-door sedan in 5-speed manual transmission. Several versions were available in left hand and right hand drives. The E34 M5 followed in production after the E28 ceased its production. The E34 was also made by hand in the Garching, Germany replacing the E28 in 1989 until 1995. The E34 was available in 4-door sedan and 5-door station wagon sitting in a BMW E34 platform. The engine choices were mainly I6, the 3.6-liter that is capable of 315 hp and the 3.8-liter that can provide 340 hp. The transmissions are either 5-speed or 6-speed manual transmissions. The BMW E39 platform was then use to come up with the E39 M5 replacing the E34 M5. First introduced in 1998 Geneva Motor Show, the E39 M5 started its production in late 1998. A total of 20,482 units were produced in the BMW assembly line (not hand-built) at Dingolfing, Germany until its last production in 2003. Sitting in a BMW E39 platform is the 4.94-liter V8 90 that can have 395 hp at 6600 rpm using only the 6-speed manual transmission. The new generation M5 followed in 2005 using the BMW E60 platform thus named the E60 M5. Its production is currently ongoing at the BMW Dingolfing plant. The 2005 model of the M5 is available in sedan (with 4 doors) and station wagon (with 5 doors). The powertrain of the E60 M5 is supplied by the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V10 that can provide up to 507 hp at 7750 rpm with the 7-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG III). The SMG III has Launch Control feature that enables its maximum performance in standing starts. This and other F1 inspired features and controls of the engine and transmission such as the dynamic stability control, and the Drivelogic that allows shifting to either automatic or manual are all featured in the E60 M5. These features usually contribute to excessive fuel consumption that usually ends to the sole criticism on the M5. The E61 M5 Touring was also launched and produced from 2007 up to the present. This model uses the same drivetrain that is used in its sedan siblings. The 2007 model was made to compete with the Audi RS6 Avant and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate. The BMW M5 is the best car for performance-thirsty drivers. Keep in mind that the high performance of the M5 makes its engine always thirsty thus requiring more fuel. This model is for those who want a powerful car and unmindful of the cars fuel efficiency. . Headlights by State: ______________________
