The BMW M3 is the first of the BMW models that carry the M badge that was taken as an abbrevation of the word Motorsport. The M accented BMW models are mostly designed by the Motorsport Division of BMW. The BMW M3 is a high performance version made by BMW of the popular BMW 3-Series particularly the E30. The M3 design was mainly based from the designs of the 3-Series such as E30, E36, E46, and the E90/2/3. The original 3-Series models were upgraded to come up with the M3 series models. Such upgrades include more improved power and response of the engines, more aggressive aerodynamic designs of the body, better suspension andd handling, and the most notable M badge in the interior and exteriors of the vehicle. The M3 was first launched with the 2.3-liter I4 S14B23 engine or S14 engine, the M6 inline-6 engine was later adapted for better performance. The original M3 models were mainly used in different types of racing. Some speculations of the creation of the M3 said that the M3 was created to compete with 1983 model Mercedes-Benz W201 190 E that uses the 2.3-16V. The M3s naturally aspirated full race trim used the 2.5-liter S14 engine that can produce 340 hp. The M3 models for road driving were also made in catalyzed models and are capable of 195 hp. The Evolution models used the 2.3-liter engine with revised exhaust cam timing and increased compression to produce 215 hp uncatalyzed. The Sport Evolution models labeled as Evolution III were also made with 600 units that used the 2.5-liter engine that produced 238 hp. The cabriolets were also produced with 786 units all hand-made in BMWs Garching plant. These models were the worlds fastest 4-seat convertibles during their time with its engine that is capable of delivering 215 hp. The BMW M3 models that started as a racing car are currently available in street legal coupe, cabriolet, and sedan models. As a race car, the M3 has received different racing homologation in every year production to ensure competitiveness in every race. The M3 can be considered as the BMW model that have the most number of variations in designs, performance, and homologation. This series also has several special editions and production generations that is currently in its fourth phase. The first generation E30 was in production from 1986-1992, the second E36 followed and remained in production from 1992 to 1999 selling a total of 71,242 units. The 3rd generation, the E46 was in production from 2000 to 2006 followed by the fourth generation that was introduced in 2007 and became available in 2008 carrying the name E90/92/93 M3. The current model of M3 is available in 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe, and 2-door convertible. The E90 stands for the BMW E90 platform used in sedan, E92 for coupe, and E93 for convertible models. All three use the same 4.0-liter 414 hp V8 with a choice of 6-speed manual or 7-speed M-DCT. The three share the same wheelbase length of 108.7 inches and differ in other dimensions such as height, length, and width.
