The Mercury Lynx was a compact car sold by Mercury, a division of the Ford Motor Company. The Mercury Lynx was not quite a market success but it did help Mercury survive through a difficult period and, at one point, it even became the highest selling car model of the Mercury marque.
During the 1980s, the demand for compact cars was increasing mainly due to the rise of fuel prices. Traditional large size car makers such as Mercury were left with nothing to put on the compact car market. At the time, the compact car market were being dominated by imports, the majority of which were from Japanese car makers. In answer to this, Ford introduced the Ford Escort and Mercury released a rebadge version called the Mercury Lynx. The Mercury Lynx was first entered into the American car market in 1981. The Mercury Lynx was entered into a hotly contested market. It proved to be a successful vehicle and, on its first release, it sold over 100,000 units. Later sales figures of the Mercury Linux would average at about 85,000 units sold every year. The Mercury Lynx proved to be the Mercury marque's lifeline to sustainability and helped Mercury weather the storms of the 1980s car sales crisis. Encouraged by the high sales of the original three door hatchback and five door wagon car body models of the Mercury Lynx, Mercury later introduced a five door sedan car body model. While the Mercury Lynx continued to be a constant high seller for Mercury, in 1987, Ford decided to drop the model line mainly because the Mercury Lynx competed directly with the Ford Escort and because of the increasing production costs for the Mercury Lynx.
The Mercury Lynx was powered by a 1.6 litre CVH four cylinder engine which was also available with H.O. and with a turbocharger. This was the same engine as the Ford Escort, being that the Mercury Lynx is basically the Ford Escort. This was true for the 1981 to the 1985 versions of the Mercury Lynx. The 1985 model of the Mercury Lynx was offered with a 1.9 litre four cylinder engine and the H.o. and turbocharged options were no longer made available. The Mercury Lynx was also available with a 2.0 litre diesel engine option. This first became available with the 1984 version of the Mercury Lynx. However it was not very successful as gas prices were becoming affordable once again. On the road, the Mercury Lynx was a solid car. It was not quite a flashy vehicle which is understandable as the car was targeted as a solution to the high price of fuels. Instead, the Mercury Lynx was a solid performing vehicle which was perfect for running around town or for even moderately long travel. The small engine of the vehicle did little to improve its acceleration stance, though the additional options for the engine gave it a considerable boost. The suspension was typical of a compact car and the fuel economy was also impressive.
The Mercury Lynx is a good choice for cash strapped buyers who want a car that can get them where they're going without drinking too much gasoline. However, its limited package puts it below some of the other compact second hand car models available in the market. Headlights by State: ______________________
