Lincoln is the luxury car division of the Ford Motors Company. The name of the company is taken from Abraham Lincoln as tribute by the companys founder, Henry M. Leland, to his longtime hero. The company was founded in 1917 but was acquired by Ford in 1922. The company currently services the countries and territories of United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, China, South Korea, and the Middle East. Henry M. Leland, with extensive experience from most US based companies now like Ford and Cadillac, started a new company of his own that he named after a famed US President. However, it experienced several financial difficulties in 1922 forcing the then owners to sell it to Ford Motors Corporation on February 24, 1922 at the price of 8 million dollars. After some few body changes and innovations, the company sold 5,512 vehicles from March to December of 1922. This made the Lincoln a top luxury vehicle brand alongside Cadillac and Packard. In 1923, several new body styles were introduced. These included two- and three-window, four door sedans and a phaeton that accommodated four passengers. By 1923, with several models and a rise in sales, they were able to produce 7875 cars. To add even customer appeal to their cars, they even introduced some optional car like the nickel-plated radiator, varnished natural wood wheel, or Rudge-Whitworth center-lock wire wheels at an extra price. In 1927, they adopted the greyhound as the companys emblem, which was later replaced by the currently used diamond. In 1932, the V-12 powered Kb was introduced and began the designing of the very important car of Lincoln during that time: the Continental. In 1938, the Zephyr was introduced as 1939 model and propelled the sales of the company into 9 folds than usual. The Zephyr became the Continental in the future the companys flagship ca until 1981. In 1981, the Town car took over the position once held by the continental and became the new model car. In 1998, the company solidified its position as the best-selling luxury brand in the United States after the massive success of the Navigator SUV. From 1998 to 2002, they were part of the Premier Automotive Group but later pulled out. As of current, more and more models have been produced by the company and the sales have consistently been high. The Continental, the Navigator and the Town Car may prove to be the most influential models of Lincoln. They are the reason why the company is such highly regarded now. The Town Car is a rear-wheel drive full-size luxury sedan and serves as the flagship of Ford's Lincoln luxury car division. The Navigator is a full-size luxury SUV, the largest of all luxury-type SUVs made by Ford and its first four-wheel drive vehicle. The Continental will remain to be a distinguishly styled, highly equipped luxury car. A new model, Lincoln MKS, will be released in 2009 in the league with its sister models the MKX, a crossover luxury SUV and the MKZ, a mid-size luxury Sedan. More innovations are also to be expected from their future models. Lincoln is still one of the best in terms of luxury vehicle manufacture in the United States. This will hold true until the years that will come. Headlights by State: ______________________
