The luxury car division of the Japan-based automobile maker Toyota Motor corporation is known as Lexus. It was first introduced in the United States and has been for the past decades since its inception in 1989, the highest selling luxury car brand in the nation. With its slogan “The Pursuit of Perfection”, it has practically swept the whole world by storm because of its product quality, and luxury and reliability of vehicles. In 2007, it was adjudged for the 14th year in a row, the most reliable brand in the United States according to the survey conducted by a private firm, J.D. Power and Associates. The report revealed that of the 53,000 Lexus-owner respondents were almost unanimous in saying that they had minimal problems with the cars in their first three years of owning it. It has also achieved high ranking in dealership service experience.
In January of 1989, Lexus had an informal launch in a North American International Auto Show in Detroit when it presented its maiden model the LS 400. This happened after years of efforts by various engineers, designers, technicians and support workers of generating about 450 prototypes. The new model had a new 4.0 L V8 gasoline engine and rear-wheel drive. September of that year, formal sales were initiated backed by a multi-million dollar advertising campaign in both television and print media. The LS 400 won several major motoring awards when released paving the way for Lexus to immediately expand its market to United Kingdom,[16] Switzerland, Canada, and Australia in 1990. In 1991, sales increased to a whopping
71, 206 cars in the US alone. This secured the company’s spot as the biggest selling luxury import in the country. The years followed saw the public clamor for the brand by way of various recognitions it has received including earned first place in J.D. Power’s studies on initial vehicle quality, customer satisfaction, and sales satisfaction. In 1991, Lexus introduced the E300 – their best selling sedan of all times. In 1996, the introduced the LX 450 - their first ever Luxury sports utility vehicle. In 1998, they launched the RX 300 - their first ever luxury crossover SUV. From then on, the company never ceased on providing quality cars for their consumers. In 2006 alone, they have sold 322,434 in the US. Right there, they have solidified their spot as the top selling luxury marquee in the US for the past seven years. Finally, in 2007, they have successfully penetrated the Japanese market.
The more popular models of Lexus include the E300 sedan, the RX 400h, and the LS 260. The E300 sedan has received numerous accolades in the motoring industry and has the reputation of being the highest selling sedan under the brand. The RX 400h boasts of being the first hybrid luxury SUV. Meanwhile, the LS 260 has been awarded as the International Car of the Year and World Car of the Year in 2007.
