The Pontiac LeMans was line of mid size car models made by the General Motors division, Pontiac from 1962 up to 1981. The car was reintroduced in 1986 up to 1993, although this version of the Pontiac LeMans was actually a badge engineered Daewoo vehicle. The Pontiac LeMans sold well for Pontiac during most of its production period.
The first time that the LeMans name was used by Pontiac was for the high end trim of the Pontiac Tempest introduced at the later months of 1961. The car was basically a trim package for the Pontiac Tempest and featured sportier, more upmarket features. In 1963, the LeMans name became its own car model. However, this lasted only for one year. In 1964, the LeMans name was again an upmarket trim level of the Pontiac Tempest. A GTO version of the LeMans trim was also introduced later in 1964. The GTO line became successful enough on its own that the GTO name became its own separate model in 1966, although much of its mechanical parts and body retained similarities with the Pontiac LeMans and the Pontiac Tempest. In 1970, the LeMans line became known as the LeMans Sport while the LeMans name was moved to the mid level sub series which was formerly known as the Pontiac Tempest Custom. The Pontiac Tempest name was discontinued in 1971 and Pontiac made the LeMans name the full series nameplate of the car line. The 1973 to 1977 models of the Pontiac LeMans as well as other car models of the General Motors divisions had a bigger size than their predecessors primarily due to design changes and the 5 mph crash bumpers which were federally mandated requirements. During this period, the Pontiac Grand LeMans was also introduced, replacing the Luxury LeMans line in 1975. When the oil embargo of 1973 to 1974 resulted in an energy crisis, car buyers began to move away from big, fuel hungry cars and General Motors downsized their car models, including the Pontiac LeMans. The loss in weight and size also came with a loss in engine displacement and the Pontiac LeMans car models of this period featured corporate GM engines instead of Pontiac sourced engines. In 1982, Pontiac discontinued the Pontiac LeMans car model name and rebadged the car lineup as the Pontiac Bonneville which was the high end full size car of Pontiac until 1981. The Pontiac LeMans name was revived by Pontiac in 1986 for a rebadged line of cars from Daewoo Motors of South Korea.
The 1961 to 1963 models of the Pontiac LeMans were sold as either 2 door coupes or 2 door convertibles and had a front engine rear wheel drive layout. The car was available with an I4 194.5 CID engine and was built on the Y-body platform of General Motors. In 1964 to 1969, the car was sold in a larger number of body styles which were a 2 door coupe, a 2 door sedan, a 4 door sedan and a 4 door station wagon. It was moved to the A-body platform of General Motors and the car was offered with a number of more powerful engine options including a number of I6 and V8 engines. For the 1970 to 1972 model years of the Pontiac LeMans, a 2 door convertible was added to the lineup. The car retained the same layout and platform but the engine available was reduced to the single 400 CID V8 engine capable of 265 hp. From 1973 to 1977, several car body styles were dropped and only the 2 door coupe, 4 door station wagon and 4 door sedan were retained. The 1978 to 1981 model year Pontiac LeMans vehicles were available as 4 door sedans, 4 door station wagons and 2 door coupes. There were a number of V8 and a V6 engine available for the car.
Solid and reliable, the pre 1986 models of the Pontiac LeMans are worth the money. The later models are Daewoo rebadges which may not be quite as solid as the earlier models. Headlights by State: ______________________
