Chevrolet LUV Pickup Headlights: Find Your Replacement LUV Pickup Headlight Assembly

The LUV pick-up was considered as one of the more reliable pick-ups that were introduced in the 1970s. The term LUV stands for Light Utility Vehicle and the term light may be a misnomer since the vehicle can be relied upon on and off the road.

When the vehicle was introduced in 1972, the main intent of the manufacturer was to send a vehicle that can directly compete with the Toyota Hilux and the Ford Courier. The vehicle was in production up until 1982 and after that time the newer Chevrolet S-10 succeeded the pick-up in the market. But it doesn’t mean that the LUV has permanently left the scene. In fact the name is still used today in the market on the badge-engineered versions of the D-Max. Many governments also relied on this truck, and one government that relied on the LUV is the Iraqi government for its local and national police forces.

The traditional truck chassis was used by the LUV and at the same time it used the leaf spring and the live axle rear suspension. Power came from the only engine, and that was the 1.8L SOHC and a straight-4 that has the capability to produce 56kW. A four wheel drive of the vehicle was introduced in 1979 and this engine was the one that pushed the vehicle to be recognized by Motor Trend magazine. Again the vehicle was redesigned for 1981with the wheelbase extended by 1.9 inches. Gas engine was used but it used the newer Isuzu C223 diesel engine that carried 58 horsepower. The use of this engine allowed the vehicle to register 33 mpg for city driving and another 44 for highway driving. Though the pick-up was made for durability and reliability though a bit underpowered, the vehicle during its time faced a serious issue. The Chevy LUVs that are introduced in the market are susceptible to rusts and rusting. This problem was validated on the last year of production of the vehicle where almost half of the trucks that were shipped have developed rusted frames and salt water corrosion was called the culprit.

In the end this was overshadowed by the fact that the vehicle delivers respectable performance and at the same time delivers reliable fuel efficiency. In fact based on its registered fuel efficiency, the LUV pick-up was considered as one of the most economical trucks ever built. Engine was the source of pride as well for its reliability.
