The Mercury LN7 was a compact coupe sold by Mercury, the more upmarket division of the Ford Motor Company. The Mercury LN7 featured mediocre sales up until it was discontinued.
The Mercury LN7 is basically just a rebadged version of the Ford EXP. The Mercury LN7 was first introduced during the Chicago Auto show which was held in 1981. The Mercury LN7 and the Ford EXP represented the first two seaters that Ford had ever released since 25 years. Like most Ford models rebadged by Mercury, the Mercury LN7 featured a more luxurious and upmarket number of features than the Ford EXP. However, the cars were essentially the same. The design of the Ford EXP, the basis of the Mercury LN7 came about as Ford looked for ways to increase the sales of Ford car models which, during the 1980s were getting a hit mainly because of the change in car buying habits of the regular car buyer which Ford was unprepared for. Ford theorized that the changing lifestyles of the 1980s opened the car markets for a European styled personal vehicle which seated two and had a small profile and a sporty driving feel. It would also have to be fairly fuel efficient since, during the 1980s, fuel prices were soaring. This is the main reasoning behind the creation of the Ford EXP and thus, the car was released in 1982 with a more upmarket and more pricey Mercury LN7 released along with it. Sales for the Ford EXP and the Mercury LN7 were unimpressive to say the least. This led to the cars being discontinued after a short production period. Whereas the Ford EXP was sold until 1988, the Mercury LN7 was promptly removed from the market in 1983 due to a very low sales volume.
The Mercury LN7 was a three door hatchback vehicle featuring a front engine front wheel drive layout. Like the Ford EXP, the Mercury LN7 was also heavily based on the Ford Escort. However, it had an updated wheelbase which made the Mercury LN7 longer and lower than the Ford Escort. It also featured a more sportier appearance profile. The engine used in the Mercury LN7 was a 1.6 litre inline four engine which was rated with a total power output of 70 hp. The standard transmission was a four speed manual transmission. The Mercury LN7 was not quite the sporty performer that Ford had envisioned. The carry over I4 engine from the Ford Escort proved to be less than able to carry the heavier body of the Mercury LN7. This translated to a sluggish acceleration profile for the Mercury LN7. The two seater layout of the Mercury LN7 also proved to be cramped and uncomfortable.
As a second hand buy, the Mercury LN7 rates less than it did when it was sold as brand new. The cramped size and low road performance of the car hardly makes it a worthy buy even as a cheap daily driver. Headlights by State: ______________________
