The K15 and the K1500 pick-up have a rich history. To be more precise this truck traces its roots to the vehicle that was introduced in 1936. In terms of the body style of the vehicle, its styling isn’t unique and style is based on the commercial panel truck. Though the K1500 was based on the commercial panel truck, the K1500 again stayed away from the usual characteristics that defined those vehicles that used the commercial panel-design truck during that time. In the absence of the huge and the windowless area on the vehicle, the new K1500 pick-up presented the large passenger compartment. The ancestor of the K1500 was basically truck-based station wagons. The early Suburban that was introduced then feature two doors and this doesn’t count the two piece tailgate and the three rows of seats that have the capacity to provide seats for eight persons. When the first Suburban was introduced in the market, the vehicle made use of the inline six cylinder power plant. The K in its name designation has a reason and it was part of the new nomenclature that was adopted by GMC and Chevrolet in the 1960s. The K was used to refer to the fact that the pick-up truck was a four wheel drive vehicle. And this vehicle was part of the popular C/K class of GMC. Vehicles that are part of this series were replaced by the GMC Sierra in 1988 and the Chevy Silverado in 1999. When the K1500 was introduced in 1960, the truck assumed a new body style different from the conventional. The new body style of the truck made use of the drop-center ladder frame. The adoption of this new body style allowed for the truck to sit lower and it featured an independent front suspension. This meant that the K1500 pickup will look like a truck but has the capability to produce car-like performance. The name of the K1500 also carried another meaning aside from the fact that the K designation tells buyers that the truck was a four-wheel drive one. Under the new naming scheme that was used by the truck manufacturer; the C10 and the K10 was referred to as the short-bed trucks. The C15 and the K15 on the other hand was known as the long-bed trucks. And all these trucks are under the half-ton category. The early K1500 that was made available for the enthusiasts used the torsion bar front suspension and the vehicle also featured the trailing arm suspension. Buyers during that time were made to choose between base and custom. Engines that were used by the vehicles included one that has the capability to produce 135 horsepower. The other engine that was used has the ability to deliver 150 horsepower and the last one has the capacity to deliver and give 185 horsepower. The changes on the truck didn’t end there; in fact a number of changes happened along the way and the year 1987 saw the end of the use of the C/K name. The C/K line-up was long associated with quality performance and the reason why it lasted long in the market, and the K1500 was one of those that provided reliability to the owners and truck aficionados.
