Jeep is one of the most popular automobile brand in the country for having extremely well on and off-road abilities. They are a division of Chrysler since 1987. However, the design dates back as far as 1900’s making it the oldest SUV in the world.
The marquee of Jeep has gone through several changes in ownership dating back as far as 1941. Right then, it was under Willys because they were the first ones to produce the civilian jeep. In 1953, Willy’s was sold to Kaiser including the marquee thus the new name, Kaiser-Jeep in 1963. In 1970, with Kaiser on the brink of bankruptcy, the jeep was purchased by American Motors Corporation. This is the perfect complement to their passenger car business by sharing components, achieving volume efficiencies, as well as capitalizing on Jeep’s international and government markets. The investment of the French company Renault on American Motors Corporation in 1979 saw an increase in development in the Jeep. However, even the French company, was not able to withstand the pressures of growing financial difficulties. This provided Chrysler the perfect opportunity to buy out AMC. By 1987, they have acquired the brand as well as the assets of the American Motors Corporation. Currently, the Jeep is under Chrysler LLC following a short-lived merger of Daimler and Chrysler that started in 1998 and ended in 2007.
Through the years, there has a been a lot of Jeep models that have captured the interest of the buying public. Among this popular models are the Compass, Commander, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and Liberty. The Liberty is a compact SUV inspired by the Dakar and Jeepster concept cars. In 2002, it was nominated as the North American Truck of the Year owing to its sleek design and amazing safety and performance. The Wrangler is an Off-road vehicle that has succeeded the World War II Jeep and the CJ by Willys. It is still very popular until now after some adjustments and innovations of its 1987 maiden version. The Grand Cherokee is a mid-sized Unibody sports utility vehicle, was on Car and Driver magazine’s Ten Best list, and was Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year for 1993. The Compass is a compact crossover SUV is one Jeep’s first crossover sports utility vehicle. Lastly, the Commander is a midsized SUV and was introduced at the 2005 New York Auto Show as a 2006 model.
Several changes and developments are underway for the future brands. However, the specific names of the Jeep models have not been divulged. It may just come off as a surprise in the future.
We are going to anticipate the changes in the Jeep lineup in the next years. With the current line, customer satisfaction is almost guaranteed. However, like any other Chrysler division, the company is dedicated into providing only the best to its customer niche. While the jeep has lasted the years of war and the tough economic situations of different countries, it can very well transform into something beyond your ordinary SUV that would suit the scrutinizing taste of the clientele.
