The Pontiac Grand Ville was a short run vehicle positioned as the top of the line full size luxury car made by Pontiac during the 1970s. The car was relatively successful during its earlier years but sales later declined due to the oil crisis of the 1970s.
The Pontiac Grand Ville was one of the most luxurious cars made by General Motors during the 1970s. The car was first introduced in 1971 and continued production up to 1975 only. During its production period, the Pontiac Grand Ville actually displaced the Pontiac Bonneville as the flagship car model of Pontiac. However, this did not mean that the Pontiac Bonneville was discontinued. It became the mid full size car model option of Pontiac, placed under the Pontiac Grand Ville and above the Pontiac Catalina. In most cases, the Pontiac Grand Ville actually shared many design and trim similarities with the Pontiac Bonneville and customers of the car were often hard put to tell these two car models apart. Certainly, Pontiac did its utmost to differentiate the two cars, giving the Pontiac Grand Ville a higher level of trim in its interior, a roofline which it shared with the premium models of the different divisions of General Motors and distinctive taillight design and front chrome trims. The Pontiac Grand Ville was usually offered with a higher level of appearance options including vinyl tops and sporty wheels. The Pontiac Grand Vile became a market success during its early years of production. From 1971 up to 1973, sales of the car were encouraging for Pontiac. However, when the gas shortages started due to the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo, the car began to lose its popularity. Car owners, seeing the high pump prices and the long lines in gasoline stations, began to be very conscious of the fuel consumption of their cars. The Pontiac Grand Ville, which featured a large engine and powerful, gas guzzling performance, became very unattractive to economy minded car buyers. In an effort to combat the declining sales of its car models, Pontiac began to downsize their cars and The Pontiac Grand Ville car model line, renamed the Pontiac Grand Ville Brougham in 1975 was ended. The car became the last full sized convertible sold by Pontiac.
The full size car model Pontiac Grand Ville sourced many parts from a number of General Motor car models such as the Oldsmobile 98, the Cadillac DeVille ad the Buick Electra. During its short production period, the car was sold mainly as a full size car model. The body styles used for the Pontiac Grand Ville included a four door sedan, a two door convertible and a two door coupe. For the 1971 up to 1972 models of the Pontiac Grand Ville, the car was built on the C-body platform of General Motors. From 1973 up to its discontinuation in 1975, it was built on the B-body platform of General Motors. There were two engines used for the Pontiac Grand Ville, both V8 engines. These were the V8 455 ci engine and the V8 400 ci engine.
Solidly and luxuriously built, the Pontiac Grand Ville is a near classic car that has high value more as a collector car model than as a practical daily driver. Headlights by State: ______________________
